When I started a new job recently, I realized I was the only woman on the staff. No biggy, I thought. Turns out, I was wrong. It quickly became evident that the manager's assistant was displeased that I was hired. I had no idea why, at first. Everytime I passed him, all I got was a cold stare, not even a "hello" or a nod. It continued this way until one day, probably just a few days ago, he asked if he could talk to me alone. I agreed, and we sat down in his office. He started talking to me about his relationship problems, and then asked me for advice...So I did the best I could. At one point it looked like he was about to cry, so I patted him on the shoulder. Suddenly, he threatens to kill me. I was scared for a moment, but I didn't move and I calmly asked why. He said that patting him on the shoulder made him feel lesser, inferior, insignificant. The next day, instead of getting cold stares, I got cold smiles. And then the other employees started making fun of me. (Character limit..)

Run, do not walk away from this job. Even if it is just a ploy to make you quit, you are going to find it impossible to enjoy your job with that kind of pressure being brought to bear on you.

If it is not a ploy to make you quit, then it is much worse and this guys personality problems will make it impossible for you to enjoy your job.

There is no reason to put up with this kind of behavior.

You might consider talking to this person's boss about their behavior. A death threat is inexcusable behavior. But you risk your job if you do this. (The old he said/she said dilemma.) It's much better to simply post your resume up again and get out in your own time. Although if you can afford to quit, I think I would.

Get comfy with the manager and get the fool assistant booted out of the company. Point out his bad habits and traits,,,shouldnt take too long. Talk defensivly and as though you were enquiring like,,"is so and so supposed to do such and such and make my work seem slow and wrong or is he able to do that? If the manager cant see his vindictive side after a short time and continues to let it happen, find something at work that only you can fix then quit, leave them in a hole and get a real job with real people.
