As a breed, dachshunds are extremely prone to spinal problems, and ages 3-7 is when this problem usually occurs. Weakness or unexplained stiffness or pain in a dachshund’s leg is usually a sign of a very serious back injury. If you don’t get him to the vet within 24-48 hours, he could lose most of or all of his ability to walk on his back legs. You can NEVER be too cautious when it comes to a dachshund’s back. If you even THINK something is wrong, the sooner you get him to the vet, the higher chance his ability to walk can be saved. I urge you to hurry.

Hi
I would definitely give the vet a call. Dogs with statures such as a dachsund (short legs, long body) can often have problems with their hips, even at the age of 4. A full exam will be helpful in diagnosing the problem. Bloodwork may be something that is suggested to you to rule out any problems.
Until you go to the vet, make sure there is a warm, comfortable area for your dog to lie down on, remembering to give him stretching room. My cats both are a little stiff during the cold winters here in Wisconsin, and it is possible that your little guy is just chilly.
Good luck!

I have dachshunds. Even though it seems as if it is a knee problem, it could very well be his spine. He is at the prime age to start suffering from back problems. My dog dog couldn't move his back legs and when I took him to the vet he said it was a slipped disk and pinched nerves. He was given some steroid pills and he was ok within a couple of weeks. (he is 4 years old also)
Take him to the vet ASAP and get him checked out.
Good luck to you and your adorable little dachshund. I hope it is nothing too serious.

Small dogs and cats frequently have knee problems. Sliding kneecaps. It takes surgery to repair. Also, dachshunds, because their spine is long and unsupported, frequently develop back problems. That could make his leg hurt, however, it shouldn't be tender when you touch it. Finally, perhaps he injured it jumping from a couch or in some other way.

He could have what's called a "slipped stifle", which is basically when the back "knees" pop in and out of socket. It's very common in smaller dogs especially. He could also have a swollen muscle (maybe he fell, or banged his leg on something). It could also be a million other things, but I'd see your vet ASAP to make sure. Good luck!

See if he will let you massage the spine, if so give him a 5 minutes massage and then massage his leg. Could someone have kicked him that you don't know about? I would call the vet no later than tomorrow if he isn't better for he could have a kidney problem....just in case get him to drink liquids even if you have to give him broth. Good luck.
