There are many free, reliable and up to date operating systems available. My favorite is UBUNTU or XUBUNTU if your computer has less than 256MB of RAM. Once you have one of these OS' installed you gain access to thosands of free programs created by the open source community. You can run these from a CD or install them with another operating system.
Remember to always back up your data before making changes to your computer.
