What did the ball do to deserve getting punched?

Seriously though, it can be worded that way, but it will probably make for a confusing sentence and writers are taught to write in a smooth flowing manner.

The boy hit the ball and watched it soar straight down the center of the fairway.

Would be a much better sentence for reading than:

The ball was hit by the boy and then he watched it soar down the center of the fairway.

It is better reading and conserves words and space.

We use this passive form when we are more interested in what happened rather than who did it.
