It's not rude at all. Also your friend does not have to know you were the one who made that donation. It's nice to help people who need it. I'm going through this hard time again with my husband. The bills just keep piling up by the thousands of dollars but with no way to pay them they just will have to wait. Insurance doesn't pay everything. It doesn't pay deductibles, car insurance, lights and gas, water bills, credit cards and other bills.

If your worried about it make it anonymous, and make a small donation in your name. I don't consider it rude, at a devastating time you can use all the help you can get. Some people consider donations charity and it might be embarrassing for them. Just let them know its out of love and concern for a fellow student.

Look at it this way. If we don't help each other, then the govt will step in and crate another inefficient department, managed by a political hack.
I really admire what you are doing.
PS:you could buy a gift cert at a grocery store,
of ypou don't want them to knw who it's from.
If you are so thoughtful, I know you'll do it the right way.

WOW you want to contribute that much to your friend?? I would think your friend would be happy to receive any amount of money from you to help out. Go for it. If your friend thinks it's rude after you do that, then just be thankful you helped the family out. Congrats to you for being so sweet and thoughtful. Good luck to you and your friend.

Why would she take offense that you are trying to help, I don't understand? Anyway, you can always do it anonymously if people are collecting donations.

If she takes offence, there is no friendship between both of you. Another way would be to help out with the groceries etc. and not give money.

One way to handle this is to make the donation anonymously

no, and there is no reason your friend needs to know even that you donated, let alone how much. True charity is done in secret...
