The term "born again" means that we have been made a new creature in Christ Jesus. Old things (habits, desires, vices etc) have passed away (died) and all things (in Christ) are new (Holy Spirit, power over sin etc). Certain denominations of Christian believers use the term to describe the change that has come into their lives. I am not a former drug addict, convict, gangbanger, abuser or anything like that but I am a born again, bible believing, God loving and fearing Christian who loves Christ. I think that people who have been in jail and such, who become born again in Christ are just overjoyed and super excited to have the truth living inside them. The truth that says you don't have to do anything the world says is ok. You can be different and choose the path provided for you by God and be free from the death sentence of perpetual unrepentant sin. I would be too if at one time in my life I was in a drug addict in jail and hated by society one day but upon the day I'm born again I get to know and understand God's boundless love for me and all that He has in store for me to live a happy, peaceful, and productive life. I'd scream it from the rooftops. However, even though I never was any of those things I still was bound to perpetual unrepentant sin. I chose my own way of dealing with things and I made a mess of my life. But since believing on Christ I am a new creature with a new beginning and a new future ahead of me. And just like any other born again believer (all Christians everywhere) I'm excited and can't wait to tell someone about how wonderful it is to be free from the opinions and actions of this world so that I can have liberty in Christ and His plan for my life.

If a Christian is a good person, moral and not in trouble with the law, they haven't swayed away from the Lord. Thus they have no need to search for the Lord and start their lives over again. It's the sheep that wonder away from the herd and ignore the shepherd that need help finding their way home. Once they come home again, they are found again (born again or reborn).

No, not at all, actually, the percentage of that is not as high as you would think, that number actually just gets more attention than the others, I have seen only a small percentage of those saved in jail, even though My Pastor is one who was saved in jail and went on to obtain a master degree at Criswell College, teaches , reads and writes News testament Greek, he is only a small percentage, many Convicts will use religion as a way to gain leniency in the courts, but as soon as they gain their freedom, revert back to their old ways, My son was like that, became born again in the jail , but as soon as he got out, went right back to the way he was, these are false christians.
You hear more about them mostly because of the biased mainstream media that only wishes to destroy Christianity.

A bit of a generalization, but most of your stronger and more vocal born-again Christians did come from such pasts. The Jesus People movement of the 1970s brought a very large percentage of hippies to faith in Christ (see old copies of Look, Life and Time). Many of these hippies were put in jail and prison for drug related charges.

Well, Jesus came for sinners to repent not the righteous. If you also notice, "born again" Christians do not stay that way but overcome obstacles and addictions and become useful members of society. Jesus is the great psychiatrist.

This is not actually true - or you'd have to show me the statistics. It may be true that the memorable stories are from those who have the most dramatic stories but lots and lots of kids are born into fundamentalist families, with boring lives, just like everyone else.

Speaking in generalities makes you sound unintelligent. You most likely come to this conclusion because people whose lives were zealously against the lord become great zealots for the lord when he does change their lives...look at paul...he killed christians and than after encountering christ he dies a horrible death as one

I've noticed this too... it might be because of religion-based rehabilitation centers such as A.A. ...

or maybe those people are just weak minded and thats the reason they got into drugs, or jail in the first place.

Sometimes a person has to hit rock bottom before they cry out to God and God uses these people in a big way to witness for him.
