It is a very disgusting thought, but unfortunately there is not much to do. Using Listerine I suppose can help, but only a little. By allowing your toothbrush to air dry does not kill all germs, have you ever opened a toothbrush, used it a couple times and then found it a few months later? There is usually a green or some odd color growth on it. Bacteria is everywhere and we cannot avoid it. I suggest to make sure you throw away your brush every 3 mo. and get a new one and like the others said NEVER let someone else use it. Their potentially harmful bacteria can be transmitted to your mouth (gum disease bacteria). And make sure if you have any sort of illness to throw your toothbrush away when you feel better. Here is an interesting fact: Every time you flush your toilet, aerosols (fecal matter) become airborne. And where do we usually leave our toothbrush? Yes, in the bathroom.

Store your toothbrush in a jar of Listerine if you are worried about the germs - I do that to clean my toothbrush periodically. It could help if you are a germophobe.

Gee I thought everyone dipped their toothbrush in mouthwash before they hung it up to dry. Also since you let it air dry those germs do not stay alive on your toothbrush.

I agree so in order to stop this exchange toothbrushes with anyone and everyone you know that way you would always be using a new toothbrush every time!

It would be gross if you were putting someone else's germs
in your mouth, but you're putting your own germs back in there,
(the ones that can survive that long anyway), so what is the
big deal? They're YOUR germs!

I'd rather brush with my nasty toothbrush then let the plaque build up.

YOUR (OUR) mouths are the most dirtiest place in our bodies for germs and bacteria, and that includes your private parts.

I've never really thought about it. At least not until someone asks to use my brush... Well, if you feel that grossed-out, just sterilize it.
