oh one more thing.. Please.. no herding dogs.. Ive been around too many I know theyre smart and theyre just playing or 'working' when they do this, but.. Every friend Ive had, that had a collie or other herding dog, has always had theyre kids 'herded' by them.. so.. thats kind of dangerous for a very small child.. even if the sweet puppies just playing :D
(sorry im being so picky.. :( )

Because of their natural, genetic "touch insensitivity", most Sporting dogs are great with kids. This means kids can usually jump on, pull at, tug, wrestle, etc and most of these dogs will wag their tails and not worry one bit about it.
They range in sizes from rather large (like the Golden Retriever and Irish Setter) to medium in size (like Cocker Spaniels, Brittany Spaniels, Springer Spaniels (English and Welsh) and so on). These breeds are very active and need lots of exercise, but are also known for being great with kids. If you want easier maintenance (less grooming), I'd go with the shorter-coated dogs (like Weimaraners, Vizslas, Pointers, etc). As for health issues, I have not heard of many inherent health problems with most Pointers. Most other breeds in this group can be associated with some health issues.
Do a little bit of research first, though ... www.akc.org ... to make sure that whatever breed you choose is right for you and your family! You can also use that website to help find a reputable, AKC-approved breeder in your area. Good luck!
PS - the "dumb" factor is a matter of finding a reputable breeder (so there are no mental genetic defects) and training him well.
PPS - neutered dogs don't get very "horny" ... but humping is usually not a sexual behavior anyway ... it's a dominance issue, so good training will break a dog of that.

I have raised many dogs and the best with kids and adults I know of are Rat Terriers. They come in a variety of sizes and the most popular are the Toy Rat Terriers. They are perfect for apartment or trailers and are comfortable just about anywhere. As with any dog they should be disciplined when need be. A Rat Terrier should never be nervous or shaky as seen in Chihuahuas. The more your child spends with them the closer they become.
If all else fails you can never go wrong with a Mutt. That was my first type of dog when I was a child. Best dog I ever had!

Yorkie for sure. I also have a Jack Russel ( my second Jack) and this dog is out of control! The methods I used to train my first Jack have no effect on this dog. When my daughter was born I brought home the first clothes she wore, they sniffed them, and stood guard by her crib. This new Jack Russel scares me on how aggressive she is. Wouldn't trust it around a newborn. Additional comment: Who is the person giving all the thumbs down? Every answer I've seen are honest opinions about a certain breed and there experience with them.

Well no small dogs are good for children under 9 because kids like animals and they eventually love animals so they will probably want to play all the time and the little dog probably won't because they are energetic but they also need a lot of intensive care the (SMALL) kind, so take a second decision on a small dog.

Cocker Spaniels. They are gentle with children. Not to small where they can get hurt easily by a 2 year old. But not so big where they will constantly be knocking the child down. And they are SOOO cute when they are puppies. Lol. And come in a variety of colors and markings.

O.k I just went through all of this. First before you get a dog get Cesar Millan Dog Whisperer season one and watch them all. I got all episodes from netflix. I could have gotten thru library but would have taken longer! It's all about the breeding/training-not breed. What I also learned is my 6 and more so 7 year old are great -they understand when you tell them if he jumps on you he "wins" -when you run away he "wins" (Teaching them to be pack leaders).DON't give him affection unless he is calm and not hyper or you will get more of it! My 3 year old is unravelling everything-She holds him, runs after him is so hyper to him -even when we crate the dog(i had to put a playpen around the crate to keep my 3 yr old away!) Now he is so freaked by her he hypes up the minute he sees her he has only ever growled at her. After getting dog whisperer I can see the puppy is fearful of My 3 yr old and I learned fear turns into aggression .So think carefully if you kids are ready. We are in toddler training more than the puppy. That being said our yorkie is awesome. Fast learning and sweet. We keep him in a puppy cut so he looks like an ewok-not too girly for a small dog just right!
OOHH just saw how young your kids are,I wouldn't have listened to myself but consider waiting. It will be so much more enjoyable if you can wait a few years TRUST me . Your small kids won't bond or respect the animal like and older child. I hate me for saying it but I'm 3 weeks in and wished i'd waited.

Cairn Terriers. I have one and they are great. Combining just the right amount of melowness and hardiness, they are addorable and got along GREAT with my 2 1/2 year old sister. And mne is quite frisky. LOL But definitely. Try to get one from a breeder.

It would depend entirely on your children's ages and your preference of hair/pedigree/excercise. Please, please research any breed you are considering to buy, and do not buy a dog solely for children. More often than not, they lose interest quickly and the dog ends up somewhere else and scared.
That said, some dogs that do well with children would have to be:
Labrador Retriever
Amercan Pitbull Terrier (bred correctly, of course. People are taking advantage of this wonderful breed)
Beagle
Field Spaniel
Miniature Australian Shepherd

Small dogs an be really pushy sometimes. Kind of like they're trying to make up for their lack in stature, I guess. Go for a medium breed, like collies. They're amazing around kids.

Jack Russel. They are crazy like kids but they never seem to break. Very durable and great temperament.
