There can be a few different answers to this question. The first is that the cat is bored an looking for something to play with! if the items are the sort of thing that will move around easily, it could simply be the boredom factor kicking in and your cat is looking for something to chase!
The other obvious answer is that your cat is trying to get more attanetion from you. Is it pushing things off the table and countertop that you have put there? While you are in the room? Are they personal items to you? The cat may be just trying to tell you that it needs a bit more attention from you and that it is bored.

Your cat desires two things in life besides food and sleep. S/he needs your attention and some way to play (hey, that rhymes!) Does your cat have plenty of toys? S/he may be bored and cannot find anything to do. Many cats also need a lot of attention, while some cats need only a little bit. Is s/he the only cat in the household? S/he doesn't have a playmate to do things with then. Does s/he go outside? These cats are usually less bored because they can roam, hunt and play with things like sticks and leaves. Are there any people at home during the daytime when people are normally at work or at school? If not, s/he may be lonely and bored also because there is no one around to even watch and there is nothing to do. Try to help your cat by making sure that you spend some special time with him/her and making sure that s/he has plenty of things to do. You also might want to consider getting another cat. If you do, you should get a kitten, because the cats get along a lot quicker and there is much less of a chance of the cats getting in a fight.

For fun! Cats like to do this because it is entertaining and then can then "chase" whatever happend to fall off. Try giving them more toys to play with and You play with them when they are doing this. My cat enjoys knocking over glasses of water off the table. He pats the glass so he can watch the water move and then tips it. Ive taught him not to do this anymore but it is natural for cats to do this.

Cats are naturally playful. You cat may get a kick out of seeing the objects fall, and from the noise they make when they hit the floor.
Get one of those hollow hoops with a ball inside that the cat can touch but not remove. My cat has one of those, and she loves it!

Ha, my cat does the same thing. It's almost to an obsessive point because even if he's dead tired of doing it, he can't seem to stop. He'll do the normal thing of batting pens and such around (knocking them onto the floor, then playing with them), but if you put something on the arm of the couch, he'll knock it off again and again. And he always looks at us with this "please stop doing that" look on his face. It's hilarious. And it's just play.

If your cat does this around YOU a lot, the answer is very very simple:
ATTENTION! (as in "pay attention to ME")
Plus, knocking stuff around is great cat play...when something flies off the table, it seems more alive, right?

I ask myself the same question, my cat loves to do that, I guess that makes her happy. I just not leave anything on her way at the table.

I see most people's cats do it to play. My cat does this early in the morning so I will wake up and feed her.

Probably just playing. May even just be trying to get your attention. I have a cat that keeps running off with my shiny jewelry...go figure.
