Judo is a sport, always has been and I assume it always will be. It translates into "gentle way". That being said, it does have significant value. Mostly in grappling on the ground. Yet there are a lot of rules to judo that simply don't apply on the street. While you can choke in judo and you do arm bars, you cannot touch your opponents face with your hands and you cannot attack any other joints. There are no strikes in judo either.

You have to remember that self defense is not about fighting but about surviving. Most traditional martial arts were developed with warfare in mind. They require a soldier's dedication to his craft, a significant amount of physical ability and conditioning and constant practice to be any good at it.

A lot of modern martial arts, epically in the US are sports orientated and you are training to score a point, not to end a violent confrontation.

If you want to learn how to fight, that's one thing, if you want to learn self defense it is something else entirely but it will include a number of physical techniques. They are not fancy, they are not pretty, but they are effective, and brutal. They don't take all that long to learn but do take regular practice to be proficient with them. What does take time to learn is the application of those techniques and wrapping your mind around doing that kind of damage to another person.

Good luck

I think it is good for that purpose since in Judo there are a lot of throws. If you fighting more than one person you can throw one to the ground and move to the next or able to make a run for it

It is an excellent art for self-defense. The throws can KO or seriously hurt an opponent and the submissions can end a fight that finds its way to the ground.

Yep. I think it one of the best at displaying defense. Because the student is taught mostly to react to the violence coming at them.
