The idea will be used to save the lives of infants and children left in vehicles. I have already gone to an invention company from T.V. They want too much money and don't guarantee their work. The USPTO website is confusing and they recommend using a patent attorney which will cost about $10,000. This is not some dumb idea and will save lives. I looked on-line at some companies that might be interested in the idea but in order to submit it to them they want it to be patented already. I have already done the patent search and know my idea is not yet out there. I know there is someone out there that has the answer for me. Please don't send me an answer telling me about American Inventor. I would like any and all other ideas or resources.

First, mail yourself a registered and certified letter, (notarizing each page will help also) containing full details and drawings of your idea. This will establish when you first thought of the invention and will help in the event of a prior art claim.

Any patent that is issued is only as strong as the financial resources that you have to defend it. These battles are often long and drawn out - a large coprporation can easily string you along until your resources are gone. The best way to defend against this is to get into bed with the largest company you can.

Go to them with non-disclosure agreements and details of your invention in hand. They will definitely talk to you if you give them a smell of the application. Remember, although they may be altruistic enough to be concerned about lives saved, they are far more interested in how many widgets they can sell and the edge they can take in a specific marketplace. Have some marketing forecasts prepared as part of your business plan.

My dad wanted to do that in the 60's but realized that it cost a lot of money and there was no guaranty that a big company would not make something similar . Then they could build 100,000 units compared to him building 100 units . They would have 1/5 the cost per unit tied up in their production and under sell him while still making a good profit.
