Most cops do carry Glocks, however I would not recommend that anyone carry a service weapon with a caliber that does not begin with a "4". Most "3" like .38 or 380 is too weak for safety. I have used a Sig Sauer .40 SW for 5 years and have used ammo from official issue to Internet cheap and it has NEVER failed to fire. Knock-down power is important but the most important thing is reliability-if the stupid thing jams you've got zero knock-down power. The reliability of a Sig is legendary.

About 60% of the law enforcement agencies in the US are using Glocks in either 9MM or .40S&W. Smaller agencies will often require thier officers to purchase thier own pistols from and approved list, which is nomrally very short. Larger agencies will issue a weapon to the officer and if the department will allow the officer to carry a backup, they again have to choose thier pistol off of an approved list.

Good luck.

I would suggest a small frame glock. Especially if her hands are small. They are lightweight and reliable. However, the type of gun is unimportant as long as SHE is comfortable with it. If she is a rookie, I would pay more attention to the type of holster she carries the weapon in. Most rookies are not comfortable with a weapon at first, and don't know how to "protect" it from getting taken away. I would suggest a level III high retention holster.

Generally, Police Depts furnish weapons to their Officers. I have never heard of one that doesn't. Many PDs have switched to the Glock 17, which is what I carry also. It is a very good choice.
