I have been having horrible lower back and flank pain. I thought it was my kidneys or urinary tract and I had x-rays, including an IVP or IPV (I forget the name).

Anyway, the x-ray tech asked me if I knew I had clamps left in me. I had my gallbladder removed last year.

Are clamps supposed to be left in?

No, clamps aren't supposed to be left in, but often clips are. If you had your gall bladder out laparoscopically, then the surgeon probably used metallic clips to close off arteries and veins to allow your gall bladder to be removed. These stay in forever and will show up on the x-ray.

Clamps on the other hand are surgical tools, which should not be left inside, or else they can cause a huge problem. In the operating room, the nurses make sure the clamp and sponge counts are correct before the surgeon can start closing up. In your case, if you had it done through a laparoscope, then no instruments should have been left inside.
