Sloppy joes are a sandwich on a hamburger bun that has been popular in the US since I was a child (and I Played with George Washington).
Just kidding about George.
This is the recipe I like to use. It's a little "dressed up" from the original but, very good and worth the effort.
Sloppy Joes
1 cup boiling water
1/2 cup sun-dried tomatoes, packed without oil
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 1/2 cups chopped onion
1 cup chopped red bell pepper
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes, undrained
1 Lb lean ground beef
6 hamburger buns
Combine boiling water and sun-dried tomatoes in a bowl, and let stand 5 minutes or until tomatoes are soft. Drain and chop tomatoes.
Heat the olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add chopped onion, red bell pepper, and garlic; saute 3 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Stir in the sun-dried tomatoes, soy sauce, and the rest of the ingredients (soy sauce through crushed tomatoes). Bring mixture to a boil; reduce heat, and simmer 20 minutes or until slightly thick, stirring the mixture occasionally. Stir in soy crumbles; cook 2 minutes or unitil thoroughly heated, stirring frequently. Spoon about 2/3 cup mixture onto bottom half of each bun; top with top halves of buns.
Makes 6 servings.

The easiest way to make a Sloppy Joe is to buy a can of Sloppy Joe sauce. Fry up some hamburger and diced onions, crumbling the meat as you cook it. When the meat is browned, drain the fat out, open the can, and pour the sauce in. The sauce is just tomato sauce with herbs and spices added. When the sauce has heated, serve it in hamburger buns. It's a simple and tasty meal.

Sloppy Joe's are sandwiches, usually served on a hambuger bun. They are made by sauteing ground beef until it's brown, and then there is a sauce mix in a can you can buy that contains basically tomato puree, onions and bell peppers, and other spices.
I haven't had one since I was a kid, but I know kids, and I'm sure some adults, love them. It's a quick and easy meal.

I can't believe how many people are enthusiastic about what I always associated with bad cafeteria food! Think ground beef mixed with a ketchupy, slightly spicy sauce then slapped on a hamburger bun. Personally, I don't recommend it, but I guess it is a bit of an American comfort food.

Cooked hamburger that's crumbled with a tomatoe based sauce. Mix it together. Slop it on a bun. Pickles and chips on the side. You can buy a can of the sauce at the grocery store. Just add the cooked meat.

They sell a canned sauce to mix with ground beef here in the U.S. It's not too bad. If you can't get it where you are you can make your own Sloppy Joes:
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Sloppy-Joe-Sandwiches/Detail.aspx
It's a cheap meal that's also kid-friendly and not too unhealthy.

Ground beef loose meat sandwiches, simmered with a sweet barbecue type sauce and served either open faced or between hamburger type buns, which are quite tasty and kid friendly........kind of our version of the Cornish Pastie......which you can't find here in California....damn it!! I love pasties.......
And, BTW, I love your "pub food", especially Scotch Eggs.......
