Take Colleen's advice and clean up your credit first. Get your credit report and make sure any false items are removed. Best to get a secured credit card if you have had difficulty getting a regular credit card. Would suggest the Orchard Bank Mastercard.

Go to your bank & ask to get a secured credit card. Or get a credit card that is for people with bad credit. The finance charges will be high, but if you pay in a timely manner it's worth it. You can also go to your bank & ask for a secured loan for x $ & over 1 yr duration. Then you make the payments on time & you will have a start on good credit by showing that you can make timely payments.

+ don't sign up for every credit card out there. Too many credit cards count against you. Keep a credit card for a long time, it looks good. Have a primary banking & checking account that you keep for years, it also looks good.

With credit, time matters. The longer you keep accounts in good standing = the better your credit. So any type of financial transaction you do that involves payments will show up on your credit report. That includes utilities & education loans.

I suggest you clean up your credit first. The only credit cards they give to those with bad credit are high interest rate credit cards that will sink you even deeper into debt.

If you have bad credit, the LAST thing you need is MORE debt. Even with GOOD credit, more debt is not a good plan. Clean up your debts and keep your money. Then you won't need credit.
