I have a lot of sympathy for your comments. I was jogging with one of my GP colleagues yesterday, ( we are both a bit addicted to exercises), and we were chatting about this very thing. Both of us spent quite some time working in prisons in the past and have a lot of experience in trying to manage addicts.

We both agreed that with everyone knowing so much about how bad drugs are, it is difficult to understand why so many people try them, and of course quickly become addicted.

We both also agreed that unfortunately, no drugs programs actually work, though huge amounts of time and money is spent on them. Once you are hooked unless you are very lucky you are hooked until middle age, when a significant number of addicts seem to manage to drift off drugs, how I am not clear. Both our experiences suggested that on drugs programs only 1-2 in a hundred actually succeed is stopping. This is mainly because of the psychological dependence rather than the physical.

All that was easy to say, but difficult to suggest any solutions. I am also a long time ex-smoker, at that time my only excuse was that I was living and working at a time when most doctors still smoked. But looking back now it is difficult for me to understand why I smoked. If I don't have an answer for that, in a way I can't answer your question either.

people that use drugs use them to escape the mundane fact of every day life. since long ago in time man has always had the urge to use mind altering drugs. If you look into the history of drug use it steams too far to even tell. In China they smoked opium to be a social thing or it was also used as a sedative. while in south America the natives had religious ceremonies that revolved the "magic" mushroom (which are AMAZING). and even to current history, like the drug LSD was invented by American scientist who were looking for a way to us mind control on the Russians. it all depends on your outlook on drugs some are horrible for you and they shouldnt be used but people have free will and if it makes them feel good they more than likely know the repercussions of their actions and it is there fault once they die from the drug.

Regarding the use of drugs, I use legal drugs, not illegal ones. I'm assuming we're talking about drugs that affect the mind. The drugs I use reduce my physical pain by depressing the area of my brain that reads pain. Unfortunately, most such drugs are addictive and so it is in my case. I'fe used such drugs over time such that I've become addicted to them. I'm speaking of drugs that are related to that flower called opium. My drug is morphine. I'ved tried to quit but I cannot. Meanwhile, the morphine does a very good job of quelling my pain and it seems it and I are stuck together for a very long time.

Once I began using morphine, I found I was holding a tiger buy its tail. I could not let go because it would turn and bite me. I could not hang on because its usefulness depreciates over time. I'm in a no win circumstance here, but it is one with which I must live.

If one can prevent it, try pain killing durgs that are not related to opium.

Errowid.com can give you truthful information, but people do usually abuse drugs for fun. However, the health effects of tobacco and alcohol far outweigh that of some illegal drugs, such as cannabis (marijuana, pot), and one can use LSD on a weekly basis and be healthier than daily tobacco and alcohol users, all other things being equal. Please try to form an opinion on drug use after you learn about it. Yes, drug use is wrong, but not so much for the reasons you may think.

No, it's not to feel good, it's to avoid feeling bad. At first they take drugs because they feel bored, anxious, depressed, inferior, inadequate and so on. After a while if they don't take the drug they get withdrawal symptoms which is what keeps them taking it. Some people are just born with a self-destruct button pressed.

Because the people who do them need a way to feel good since psychologically they don't. For myself persoanlly I used drugs and alcohol because I was depressed, and they turned that part of my brain off. I could escape. And even though I knew that they could mess me up if I did too much, I still did them because I was desparate.

Alcahol and tobacco are OK. They don't have the long term psychological effects of illegal drugs which **** people up big time. Cocaine seems to be doing the rounds big time at the moment. Why? Are people devoid of talent and confidence? If so it's a pretty sad way of getting them. What I reckon is that for every unnatural up there is an unnatural down so we are going to see far more depressed people in years to come (thinking about E's here)

Short answer is because they're enjoyable at the time and people tend not to think about long term consequences of their actions - in any field of life. This applies especially when you're young and the idea of lung cancer at age 60 is almost inconceivable.

I used to use them because they felt good. I loved mdma. It would make my problems melt away. I felt at peace with everything. That's why they are so addicting. It is fun.
In the end they are destructive and honestly, they have taken more out of me than I have taken out of them. It's just not worth it.
Now I don't even drink coffee and I feel great.

They do it because it gives them a temporary high and lets them forget about their troubles for a while.

Its easy to judge, but everybody does things that are ultimately bad for them, there are not many people that don't do at least one of the following:

Drinking alcohol
Driving too fast
Eating too much
Not eating enough
Smoking
Taking drugs
Having unprotected sex
