What is an appropriate gift for an Eagle Scout's "Court of Honor" party? We're invited to one next week and have no idea what we do, give etc. I would greatly appreciate any advice, info. etc. Thank you in advance. bjbny

I would not get him anything. The point of the party should not be to get a gift for a lifetime accomplishment, but to fellowship with him and celebrate the accomplishment.

If you are looking for an excuse to buy a gift, though, I would purchase a good motivational book on daring to dream or how to pursue your dreams.

There are several books out there that tell about how Eagles live (one is called: Return of the Eagle: How America Saved Its National Symbol) that would be very interesting to read. That or some other symbolic eagle statuette, plaque, print, etc.... would be a great gift.

If he is a Christian, there is a book called: The Eagle Christian, that is a study of Christian life and how it relates to the Eagle in nature.

Both the Dem's' and re pubs' can rarely agree on anything even when they want the same thing. Unless you go to c-span you will not see much coverage of third party candidates. Large corporations make huge contributions to candidates they support, you are limited in how much you can donate to a candidate personally. Corporations set up committees and groups to support and fund candidates. The latest bankruptcy laws were written by the banking industry for congress to make into law and it bit them in the butt. The other problem is that some people vote for 1 party all the time, either because they support that party all the time and believe it is the only party to do whats right,or they are dissatisfied with the other party for some reason. Both parties want it their way and will compromise some to get their way. If what I read on the Internet last night is even half true, this election may not matter anyway. If we have another attack like 9/11 or a major disaster before the elections F.E.M.A . will take control and George Bush will become the true power of government. If it happens after the elections and before the new president takes office,I don't know what will happen. G.W. signed an executive order for the continuity of government and F.E.M.A. will take over and suspend the constitution and the President will be the unity executive. Congress and the Supreme Court will still exist but will have very little voice, the President has the final say in all matters. There was also another site talking about the formation of the North American Union (Canada,U.S. and Mexico forming a union like the E.U. and the U.S. Constitution will be gone.

Like any gift, it depends on the person getting it. How old is he, what are his interests, what is his Troop doing for him, etc. Some Troops present the Eagle with a neckerchief. If this one does not, and Eagle neckerchief is nice, or an Eagle neckerchief slide (both available at your Scout shop). If he is about to turn 18 and won't be doing any more Scouting perhaps something that could be useful at college (flashlight perhaps?) would be nice. A card and gift certificate to a camping store. I always like to give the "Eagles Greatest Hits" CD if the boy likes that sort of music.

People seem to give a lot more gifts at Eagle courts of honor now than when I was younger. Seems like your being there and, perhaps, a card should be enough. The boy shouldn't have earned the Eagle to get gifts.

DO NOT GET A POCKET KNIFE. For the sole reason that this is what EVERYONE else will get him. I went to an eagle scout ceremony last year and heard the kid talking a month later about how he ended up with 15 pocket knives, and many were engraved so he couldn't exchange them.

The best thing you could get him is a gift card to an outdoor sporting goods store like REI. That way he can get whatever he wants and won't end up with a non-returnable duplicate of what everyone else gave him.
