Your puppy is so lucky that you care enough to feed the best!
There are many high quality dog foods available these days..I used to feed Nutro Chicken/Rice and Nutro Lamb/rice.....My pups grew great, and, as my breed is long-coated, they had gorgeous coats in no time...
However, their teeth were always stained..I never knew why, but they seemed to need constant cleaning, to be ready to show..

So, I switched to Eukenuba, and they had better teeth, and nice coats..but bowels were always loose...

I fed Abady's for 2 litters, and liked what it did for the pups..but it stank..and was too un-handy....

I fed Purina Pro Plan when it came out..Pups did well..no complaints...

However, my supplier recommended Canidae 21/2 years ago..WOW! I never knew that my oldsters could be so rejuvenated! Suddenly they were putting on gorgeous coats, and acting as puppies..full of play..dancing as we walked...It just blew me away...
Then I took a 10 year old to have a cyst removed, and the vet came out amazed at her blood-work..he said that it was that expected in a 4-5 year old...He also said that he always cleans teeth while they are 'under', but that her teeth were absolutely clean..

I took another in to be spayed, at 7 years old, and the vet was amazed at how white and clean her teeth were..and then when he took out stitches..commented that she healed so fast that the incision was already hard to see...

All my dogs have just thrived on Canidae, and I would sure recommend it..It is made from all human grade ingredients, and natural preservatives..
there are other foods that are likely as good..but, as Canidae is easy to find, and they are doing so well, I wouldn't want to switch..
Other great dog foods that you can find most places, are Wellness, Innova, Solid Gold, Wysong, Natural Balance, Royal Canine...
If you look at the ingredients you listed, the meat is first, and then grains..However, there are three grains listed, so that could very well mean that they are actually at the head of the ingredient list, but, since they are listed separately, it only appears that the meat is 'first'...If you look at Canidae ingredients, it lists chicken, turkey and lamb, all above the grain source..(brown rice) which means there is more chicken than rice, AND more turkey than rice, AND more lamb than rice...

Is this the puppy formula? All puppies should be on puppy food for the 1st year.

As for good foods. Nutro Natural Lamb and Rice is great for the coat and as with any "premium" food, will help reduce the quantity of stool. We fed our lab who had severe allergies this for 10 years (once we figured out his problem) and he lived to be 13 with a beautiful coat and great health right up until the end.

We have Yorkies and feed ProPlan to them.

The less fillers in the food the better and the more meat in the beginning of the ingredient list the better. Stay away from foods with a lot of rice, meal, corn, etc. as these are fillers.

ProPlan and Nutro are probably my two favorites and have a variety of blends that allow you to figure out which your dog prefers best. If you are changing food, be sure to do it gradually as not to upset your puppies system. Substiture a third portion to their normal food for the first few days, then about 1/2 and then keep going until they are fully switched.

Good luck and have fun raising your new baby!

Nutro Natural Choice isn't a bad food, in fact I do have it on my recommendations list. Their are better ones. And I'll show you how to find them.

I don't recommend "puppy" food for puppies. Instead I recommend a high quality All Stages food. These can be fed from puppyhood through the senior years.

Reason why puppy food is BAD for puppies is contains to much protein and calcium. This promotes fast growth. Fast growth leads to bone and joint problems later in life. An All Stages food promotes a much healthier slower growth, and thus helps prevent future bone and joint problems. Puppies should grow up slowly, not spring up like weeds.

Nothing you find at a grocery store is going to be a good food. High quality foods can be found at large pet store chains, or online. A couple of foods I like are Nutro Natural, Innova, Innova Evo and Cannidae.

There are other high quality dog foods. Here's how to spot them:

A high quality food will have little or no fillers such as corn, wheat or soy. These aren't very digestable for dogs, and are common food related allergens. Since you were seeing corn meal in the first few ingredients, those are not high quality foods. Foods list ingredients by content, with the ingredient it contains most of at the top.

A high quality food will not contain BHT, BHA or Ethoxyquin, these are all chemical preservatives that have been linked to cancer.

A high quality food will not contain by-products of any kind. Meat meals are ok as long as the source of the meat is listed, such as Chicken Meal.

A high quality diet should have meat as at least the first ingredient., and be made from human grade ingredients. Foods that don't use human grade ingredients often get their ingredients from less than desirable sources, such as meat from animals that were diseased, or euthanized.

There is another diet option other than dog food. Some people choose to feed a raw diet. This involves feeding the dog raw meaty bones and organ meat. However it is not as simple as throwing a couple chicken bones in a bowl everyday. If you wish to feed this type of diet, do lots and lots of research first. Switching to this diet without knowing what your doing can lead to nutritional problems for your dog. I'll give you some links as a starting point in research if you are interested in this type of diet.

Nutro is one of the best foods out there for any dog. My Beagle has IBS, and a seizure disorder, the Nutro has helped his IBS to the point of no more diareaha, and his seizures have gotten less and less. I swear by Nutro. My dog eats the lamb and rice formula also. Remember, dont switch foods unless you mix the two together, your dog may get an upset stomach for a while unless you mix. But just stick to the Nutro.

It seems to be an okay food but there are better foods for the same price, if this were one of the cheaper foods then I would suggest getting it, but since it's around the same price as Innova or Canidae I would suggest those instead.

All of my dogs eat Innova EVO, they are very active and have shiny coats, strong and white teeth, lots of muscle but aren't fat at all, and are hardly ever sick. They have small, non-smelly bowels and I'm just obsessed with this food. lol
The first ingredient is a meat, but there's also alot of fillers and grains that would make it more likely to be placed farther down the list.

Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex

That's not good. It's synthetic vitamin K, and has been linked to health problems in dogs. That ingredient alone was what stopped me in my tracks on most foods when I was finding a new food to feed my Boxer, Izzy.

Here's a link for a page with plenty of information about that ingredient: http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=menadione (I seem to foist this web site on people alot . . .sorry ;) ) Other than that, it looks good to me. No corn, or byproducts.

Your question is what??? Is this food a good food? Or is it that you were wondering how bad this food is????? According to you!

I have fed my Golden's NUTRO for 20 plus years and they are healthy and happy and have beautiful coats. Their muscle tone is top notch, eyes clear and bright.

P.S. My dogs teeth are clean and not stained at all. Maybe it's the breed of dog Chetco raises or even the acidity in the dogs saliva that made them stain. I really don't know but I have not had that problem on NUTRO.

I know someone that is a animal nutrionist and they said the Nutro brand is not that good. We feed our puppy blue buffalo. She said it is a very good brand and is more natural in ingredients than most. Our puppy loves it. :]
