don't buy adobe acrobat pro, its waaaay too expensive and complicated. Just install CutePDF, and you are set to go. CutePDF will make a fake printer on your computer, and whatever document you want to convert into PDF just select the "CutePDF" printer from the print option of word, and it will ask you where to save the file and it will save it as PDF. You might need to install another small program inorder to make CutePDF work i think it is called GhostScript or something, i'm sure the link to that thing is given on the CutePDF's sites' download section. Just google CutePDF to find it's site
An alternative is PDCreator, which does the similar thing, but it is 1% complicated as compared to CutePDF as it asks for a bunch of options before converting the file
I believe PDFCreator, CutePDF and GhostScript or whatever it is called are all freeware software

Yes you can, but you will need to use a PDF generating software. There are various free versions of the software out there as well as the more expensive Adobe Acrobat software. Either way you are going to have to download or buy software in order to convert to PDF format.

Another possibility ... download and install OpenOffice, which is free. Then open the Word document in Write, and save it as a PDF.
Keep in mind that OpenOffice 2.0 is a 90+ meg download. If you don't have a high-speed connection, you'll probably be better off to spend a few bucks (ONLY a few) and order a CD. Even by the time you pay shipping and handling for a CD, it's a steal compared to MS Office.

Try some free programs such as CutePDF printer. It will create a virtual printer in your 'Printers and Faxes'. Therefore, you can create pdf file from any program that can send data to printers, it is just going to ask you where to save the pdf file when you send it to CutePDF printer.
