I don't think cotton is enough to protect the egg from anything more than a 2 or 3 foot drop. Try a thicker padding that will break of upon impact. Also, keep space between the padding and the egg if possible. Also, don't try to use anything similar to a parachute unless you have multiple opportunities to drop the egg.

This might go over better in Engineering. Is this what I think it is, one of those egg drop things for school?

I had to do this for a science class.

Remember, you want to dissipate the blow when the egg hits the ground. If it's just wrapped tightly with cotton, the blow won't get deflected much. Think pillowy, billowy, fluffy. Don't think of a tight covering--you want puffs of cotton, plump puffs that will insulate against the shock.

Or maybe something springy, like a shock absorber in a car.
