They don't need to be, but it may help them sleep. Parrots are accustomed to sleeping in total darkness and silence, so covering them (especially with a dark cover/towel/blanket/throw if you use the lights in that room after they get put to bed) does help since birds need at least 10 to 12 hours of sleep. I usually cover my lovebirds at 7:30pm and uncover them at 7:30am.
However, it all depends on the bird. If your bird seems fine with being covered, great! If it freaks out, it may have night frights, in which case many people leave a bit of light peeking in or hook up a night light so they don't get totally freaked out. (This is more common in cockatiels)

You don't necessarily have to cover the birds but it does help to keep drafty air away from them and helps them feel secure. Just as good as covering them, is to provide a night light. Otherwise birds will fly around the cage and hurt themselves. We have keets and tiels in our family room. They are covered with a blanket by about 8:00 and we turn out the lights for them as well, just like we do for our big parrots. The big parrots are really boisterous and grouchy if they get disturbed at night. If a light is on and they are not covered, they will chatter all night long.

I try to make sure my birds are sleeping by 8:00 because I heard that they should be asleep by 8:00 and wake up at 8:00. But I never go to bed that early so I cover my birds with a sheet so they will be able to sleep

You don't have to no. My daddy and mommy do only because they stay up later than us. Remember we need it dark to get good sleep and should sleep 10-12 hrs a day. Also remember we need sounds around us or we get scared, in the wild no sound means predator so we get freaked out and can have little heartattacks. My mommy and daddy put a radio next to me when they go to bed. Not too loud tho remember we hear 10 times more decibles that a dog can.

We always covered our parakeets at night. I think it gives them some privacy, as they know it's time to sleep. If it were extremely hot, I would not cover them.

Not a blanket, but a light sheet should be put over the cage, otherwise it will chirp all night. It's just to keep out the light.

Too keep them from freaking out on random and making noises all night, yeah... It's best if you put an old blanket over the cage, cause it can easily get ruined.

No, I wouldn't cover it unless he/she won't let you sleep. Most birds quiet down at night unless lights are on and your moving about the house and they want attention. I have 4 parrots and I only cover one because he desides to sing at 11 pm. My husband is up and lights are on so we have to cover him so my daughter and I can sleep.

Yes you should cover the cage at night while the birds sleep so they won't be able to see their surroundings and get scared easy. The darkness also helps them sleep.
