not bad, to me. I have a friend that thinks it hurts but most of us like it. It just feels like you are getting scratched over & over but you get this weird natural buzz with it so it is kind of a turn on.

I've always thought of it much like having a stiff brush dragged over a sunburn. Having had just that done to me, it's a fairly close comparison. Not something I would do for kicks, but well worth the art involved.

The outer arm & shoulder are less painful places in general. The back near the shoulder is a little moreso, but not that much. My first tat was on my upper left back near the shoulder, and only towards the bottom near midback was I that uncomfortable. You can look at my 360 if you want to see the area it covered (first picture only of my album). That's about 3 hours too, in case you're curious.

See the URL below for a general mapping of areas vs the discomfort involved.

To me it felt like a cat was scratching a sunburn on my back. It is not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. You should go for it! It really is more annoying than painful, though there were a few moments that I winced in pain, I mean it is a tattoo. But like it was said above, if it hurt that bad would people be getting so many tattoos? And as far as getting aids from a tattoo, as long as you go to a clean reputable shop you will be fine!

I have a tattoo on my upper back near my right shoulder. When they first started it felt like repeated cat scratches and then after a little while I went numb. It wasn't too bad. I actually liked it and got 3 more tattoos after that. Maybe I'm just weird though...haha

everybody is going to tell you different things. i would compare it to a cat scratch that lasts for the duration of the tattoo. sharp pain but with stinging as well. different parts of the body have different degrees of pain. i would say that all of mine have been between a 3 and a 7 on a scale from 1-10 but mostly like a constant 5. sometimes it hurts less and sometimes it hurts more. but obviously it isn't THAT bad or people wouldn't get so many tattoos, right?

I have two tattoos, one in my foot, and one on the top of my back along my back bone. On a scale from one to ten the one on my back was a 1 at its worst (the rest of the time it tickled lol) and the one on my foot was at its worst at 4 and the rest of the time a three. However, everybody is different and different places hurt worse than others. Generally speaking the less hair and more bones that is in the area the more it hurts.

I think it's like being burned the whole time,it hurts but if you think it's worth it ,pain before beauty.I do not have any tattoos.I have only heard this information.I bet it does hurt pretty much. It's a needle going into your skin real fast over & over again. There was someone I knew that got Aids from a dirty Tattoo needle. You must be careful. In all these cool things to do...

It depends on you as a person...how well you tolerate pain, etc..I saw some answers that said that they thought it was a 8-9 re: pain, but I only thought it was a 2-3....depends on where you get it and your pain tolerance.

they have these things that are like baby wipes that they can wipe on your skin before you get a tattoo. It numbs the area that they are working on. Though it still hurt a little bit when they went on my tailbone. Hope this helps! The numbing wipes only cost a few dollars more!

it feels kind of like electricity coursing through your skin. it is totally liveable though. you get little breaks while they stop and wipe. the coloring in isn't as intense as the outline. also, you will find certain spots are way more tender than others. when you're done you will love it.
