I used melted butter every time. Works great and tastes great. I'd hesitate to use margarine because you can't tell the water content of it... you need a certain amount of oil (fat) to get the consistency of the brownie right.

You can also fold in chopped pecans, dark chocolate chips...

The oil makes the brownies chewy. Butter or margarine will make them crispier.

Absolutely! I do it all of the time! Either butter or margarine works well..just don't use the margarine 'spreds'. (You could also use applesauce in lieu of any oil/margarine - amt per like amt, like 1/4 c oil 1/4 c applesauce)

oil has a different consistency. the best way to know is to make the recipe with the substitution.

no you cannot sub butter or oleo for oil they will come out flat
