Copper ore comes from, among other places, Zambia and various other central African countries, Australia and Chile, and it's smelted. The purest copper, electrolytic copper, is used for electrical wiring. This is about 99.9% pure. Even a small amount of impurity causes a big increase in electrical resistance. Electrolytic copper is made from low grade copper by making the impure copper the anode in an electrolytic cell. The anode gradually dissolves and is deposited on the cathode, and the impurities form a sludge. This process uses a large amount of electricity, so electrolytic copper is quite expensive.
