I'd really suggest not getting involved in it. Dating this girl is only going to strain relations between you and your guy friend. Seriously, I've been through this situation several times on both sides, and it never turns out pretty. Think about it. You got over your last crush fairly quickly, it seems, if you're able to use another girl to replace her. You'll find another girl in the future, I promise. Keep her as a friend... it's the right thing to do.
(By the way, you never stated if she likes you or not. I'd hope that she doesn't, because that would complicate the situation even more, liking both of you...)

Need more details. "The most awkward thing ever," eh? That's pretty awkward. Why would it be so? How long have you known/been friends with her? Would your male friend beat the piss out of you for asking her out? Not sure I like the way you use "keep her as a regular friend," that's kind of arrogant and chauvinistic. Regardless, good luck.

it is your choice to ask her out, BUT, you do have to think about the consequences, this could really hurt your friend, even though he will no longer admit that he likes her, it is only because you teased him about it, he STILL likes her, also, do you truly like her, or is this more of a competition thing with your friend? If you ask her out, it could ruin your friendship with your guy friend, so she better be worth it.

wow, I have a very similar problem.
This is what I say, if you really like her, go for it. A lot of times people diss the person they like to hide that they like them or to just have an excuse to talk to them. But if your friend does like her, that might start a conflict.

well the best thing that you can do is to have your friend ask her out and while this happens you become her close friend
once he breaks up with her then you ask her out
this works all of the time becaus once you get to know her you will know if you really want to date her
all you have to do is wait
