Are they for keeping the dog's joints warm or for keeping it afloat in the water?

Pom-poms, or ‘bracelets’, were originally left covering parts of the dog’s body for protection against the cold, especially during winter hunts. Most of the fur was clipped short to facilitate swimming but the joints and chest area needed protection from the cold. The pom-pom on the end of the tail served as a flag when the poodle dove under the water’s surface.

If you want to know more about the breed, take a look at the Kennel Club website where you can also find contact details for Breed Clubs.

The Poodle clip was functional, not decorative. The "Lion" cut demonstrates very well the coat left to protect the lungs and the "pom" protects joints. Contrary to the belief of the ignorant, Poodles are not a toy of the rich, and are one of the most intelligent of breeds. Because of the stupid remarks of the ignorant, I once decided to try obedience work with a Toy Poodle. She competed against Shepherds and Border Collies, and was often used in the demonstrations, as she did so well. She eventually went on to learn tracking. She loved to be worked, and, at 15 still loves nothing better than to do heel work. She is as good as my Collies.

The poodle is not a French dog but a German water dogs
( puddle means splash in German), they have webbed feet and are very good swimmers.
They do not moult and were shaved so as to allow them to swim better. The top-not on the head was left so they could be see in the water.
Then the French aristocracy adopted them and styled their hair into what we see today.
I don't think that the pom poms have any use.
The standard poodle is an excellent dog and not in the least soft as some people think

glad you asked....the pom poms are for keeping their joints warm. next time you see a pic. or a real poodle with one of the special cuts, pay attention to where the pom poms are....where each of their joints are. A long time ago poodles were used for hunting all kinds of things (yes believe it or not) so thats what the special cuts were all about. Now I think they are just more of a fad thing.

The 'odd' haircuts poodles wear served a purpose at one time.

Poodles used to be used for hunting. (not toy poodles of course) When the dog was retrieving in cold water the "odd" haircuts protected the dogs vital organs, and joints as well.

The poodle clip is for keeping joints protected when they were originally used as hunting dogs. They would go through water and knock into submerged branches etc. Protection.

God only knows! Just down the road from me is a large clipped standard poodle (the big variety). It looks like a giant animated furball with a lavatory brush at each corner.

keeping the joints warm, as they are gun dogs and love the water, but really it is a traditional cut and people like to see them well-groomed like this. Personally I have no particular preference how they look.

Actually your right on both parts. The fancy haircuts on poodles are to help keep vital parts warm while they are used as hunting and retrieving dogs. The cuts became more fancy once these dogs became more popular with the rich.

The way that poodles are cut is because they were orginally bred to be hunting dogs.
