I know it varies, obviously. But the IRaq Casualitie website usually says "While conducting operations..." .... Is it usually soliders/marines on convoys, or patrolling dangerous areas, etc?...

You all are ignorant. i just got back from my second combat tour in iraq. the major cause of death for the armed forces in iraq is the IED (Improvised Explosive Device). 4 of my friends were killed instantly with one IED. Soldiers die because of lack of training Marine Infantry dies from bad luck.

I don't have the data, so this is my guestimate from inductive reasoning.
General Infantry- Generally, under trained and in harms way...
Scouts (Army) IED's fire fights
Special Forces (Any Service i.e. Navy Seals, Delta Force-Army, Marine Recon, Army Rangers Etc.) In enemy territory much of the time.
Military Police (M.P.) Patrols from i.e.d., suicide bombers, snipers etc.
Marine Expeditionary Forces "first in last to leave"
Helicopter Aviators and Crew A lot on the news lately
Armor/Light Armored Divisions (IED, RPG)
Logistical Supply Divisions (Convoy Ambush)
These are the types of troops and what their skirmish is usually about, who walk the front line from day to day. Mercy... There are probably others, but this should cover most the bases.

Im a combat medic in a Forward surgical team, you see all kind of death going on, IEDs are the number one killer most are truck drivers and people in convoys. We can fix gunshot wounds not people missing half there body.
