harmonics are caused because they can exist , they are standing waves , if you double the frequency it still a standing wave .

preventing you can fix the points that move most, where te amplitude of the wave is most. this will create another wave with a higher frequency. but the other wave is gone. repating this until you are satisfied with the result.

its caused by hitting a wave at its peak and it doubles in strenghth this is how the tacomas narrows bridge failed
i dont know how to prevent it but do something to disrupt the rythem in the wave and you get a viberation more than a wave
