Windows XP Home. Firefox loads ok, but Internet Explorer freezes the HP laptop if I try to bring it up.
I must have deleted an important piece of software without knowing it.
Ideas??

Do NOT reinstall the windows software - it isn't necessary. Go to the website (via Firefox) www.microsoft.com and go to the downloads section. Download and install Internet Explorer 7 - this will reinstall all the necessary components and allow you to use Internet Explorer again.

Go to Control Panel | Internet Options | click on the Advanced Tab and under Settings scroll down to Browsing. Uncheck "Enable third party browser extensions" and then try to start IE again. You may want to try uninstalling IE (version 7.0) from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, and then try reinstalling it. You should be able to initiate a new install from Microsoft's site via Firefox. You can also go to the "Programs" Tab of the previously mentioned screen and click the Manage-addons button at the bottom. Try disabling suspicious addons one at a time until IE starts okay. It sounds like some app is causing the problems. Like McAfee Internet security addon. I've seen that act the same way.
