It was the major daily animal protein source in the OT setting. Meat from animals and birds was a rarity, usually only eaten on feast days when animal were sacrificed. In this case, meat is not "animal flesh", but "food eaten on feast days". On days of penance, you don't eat foods you would eat on a feast day. Have you ever heard of a feast where you "slaughter the fatted trout"?

it is, but some vegetarians still eat it. they make these weird "exceptions" to meat. they just classify themselves as something other than vegetarians. altough, they kinda are. almost.
