6 months is probably a bit young for a Malamute. It's easy to tell if they are in heat, because their female area, where you say the tip is red, the WHOLE this would be swollen and puffed out.

It sounds like she's going into heat - just not full blown into it yet. She'll lick herself a lot, it'll start to get red in that rea, and it may swell up. It won't start bleeding right away, but give it about a week and she'll start to bleed. If you don't want to pay the extra money to have her fixed while she's in heat, you should buy sanitary pads for her. They make them especially for dogs, just go into your local pet store and ask for sanitary pads and the 'diaper' it goes in. This well help because she won't be bleeding all over your carpet and your belongings. But you should get her fixed soon. By waiting, you increase her chances for getting cancer.

If you take her out to dinner, and she puts her paw on your thigh and says, "let's skip the movie and go back to your place" - that's a pretty good indicator.

If there are half-a-dozen mutts hanging around and howling all night, that means she's in heat!
