It is an advice and health information service available to access either through phone (0845 4647) or the internet.
They are manned by nurses who doesn't really ask you the questions (confidential info), but mostly answers your questions.
Even if they do ask you questions, it's mostly to confirm diagnoses or to understand the situation better.

NHS direct is a health service you ring and talk to someone explaining your health problem if they can they will advise you what to do, if they can't they get a nurse or if your lucky a doctor to call you back, if they think that you should be at the hospital, not sure but they will send an ambulance. Really it is getting health advice and they are good. Yes it is confidential.

Its a first point of access to NHS services. Experience can vary greatly depending on the operator you get connected to. My mother has 25 years of experience, the girl next to her only 6 months. I know who I'd rather speak to. It is confidential but if you want to be sure then access services via your GP. That system has worked for years and doesn't have the same bugs to be ironed out.

A telephone service to get any problems dealt with. You ring give them the info. Someone rings you back. However I have always waited one or two hours for the ring back and always been told to take my child to the hospital - getting there hours after I probably should have gone and getting stuck in a four hour wait for triage!!
Unless very minor complaint, or a niggley thing best to head straight for the hospital. Definately my experience when ringing about sick child.

yeah totally confidential, they are just like a health advice line. They take details from you and give you sound advice. It was put in place to help take the load off doctors surgeries.
They will help you decide if you have something that needs to be seen b a doctor, whether it is something you can treat yourself, whether your problem is "normal" whatever you need to know really.

I phoned for my 8 year old daughter last saturday night, for advice really, what a complete waste of time. She had an abcess and was in some right pain, I phoned to see what I could do for her, this was 8.30pm, they said someone would phone back within 2 hours [10.30] What time did they phone back, my daughter was in bed, and I was ready for bed quarter to one in the morning. DISGUSTING

They ask a lot of questions about the illness and then arrange for somebody to call you back to give further advice. Well that's my experience of them anyway.
