Even though you are an adult, think about using kids learn to read books. I did this with ESL adults, some of whom did not know how to read in their native language either.
I know it sounds silly, but you can find learn to read books at every level at the library. You can read Dr Seuss or about more educational things like nature or trucks. I shop at a national store called Lakeshore Learning and they have a good selection. Check them online at www.lakeshorelearning.com
When you read and find words you don't know, write them down and look them up later. that will help too.
Good luck!

A reading material that is divided into many separate parts is suitable because when you finish one part you'll get propelled to start up the next one. That's why I think you should buy an encyclopedia in which many different subjects are discussed briefly which means it does not require a great expenditure of time and will bear the fruit of happiness at the end of each reading session when you think you've learned something nifty. Encarta Encyclopedia from Microsoft is most recommended because of it's rich multimedia activities which makes it appealing yet educational. Another very useful online encyclopedia is wikipedia : www.en.wikipedia.org available in many languages (compared to encarta you may find it a bit too technical and lacking in that much multimedia fun)

If you really struggle, there is a book called toe by toe, which is really good for anyone with reading 'blocks', autism, aspergers, dyslexia and many other learning difficulties. It works by helping you build up your skills by repeating sets of words daily and increasing the difficulty. Really is worth a go
