what exactly is it? why is it different from baptism to remit original sin or baptism of water?

The answer to your question is obviously NO they can't.Anyone that would think water washes away sin is incapable of such understanding for they are deceived.John the baptist said it well when comparing the two different baptisms "I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost" Mark 1:8.Don't you just love that? Baptism of the holy spirit is not Catholic. It is Protestant and Pentecostalism.
We believe in the sacrament of Confirmation in which a Catholic recieves the full power of the holy spirit like the disciples on Penticost. This is not a baptism, but a laying of the hands by a bishop.

Odd you should ask Catholics about this, since it usually associated with Pentecostal Protestant churches. One usually enters into this new commitment to the Holy Spirit when, after a course of instruction like the Life in the Spirit Seminar, a person is "prayed over" by other members of the community, while personally offering a prayer of commitment and acceptance. The "baptism in the Holy Spirit" is not a sacrament, is not necessary for salvation, and in no way replaces the holy Sacrament of Baptism. The name is used because "baptism" literally means "immersion", and the objective is fuller immersion in a Spirit-led life.

There is only one valid kind of baptism, via water, and in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Baptism is always a one time event, and a function of God the Holy Spirit, who cleanses the soul, takes up residence there, bestows special gifts which leave an indelible mark, and grants membership into both the Church, and the family of God.
Anything else is simply a false tradition of men.

The way that God designed it is this way. Acts 2:38 says repent of our sins and be baptized by immersion in the name of Jesus Christ to be washed clean of our sins, then we will be given the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in an unknown language Acts 2:4 10:45-46, 19:6 St. Mark 16:17. This is for everyone to get rid of sinful behaviors. The Chasismatic Movement is still going strong in many "religions". This is how to gain entrance into the Kingdom of God St. John 3:5. Nowhere in the Bible did the Apostles baptize using the titles father son holy ghost. The name of the father is Jesus Christ (I am come in my Fathers name), the name of the son is Jesus Christ, and the name of the Holy Ghost is Jesus Christ (I shall send you another comforter in my name).

enigma's answer is correct. baptism of the holy spirit is not catholic. in the catholic faith, the only baptism is the baptism into the church, which most catholics recieved as babies. this baptism is the initiation into the catholic church. usually when the kid is in about 8th or 9th grade, they are confirmed, which means they are considered adults in the church and can become eucharistic ministers, lectors, etc.(of course, it has a deeper meaning, too, but i won't explain that right now) hope this helps!

Confirmation is what is says it is, confirming your belief at the age you are considered to be capable of that decision. The three main sacraments every catholic should have is babtism(acceptance of God), communion(acceptance of Christ) and confirmation(acceptance of the Holy Spirit) then you are an adult in the eyes of the church. Its sort of similar to a bar mitzvah is judaism.

It's all the same. We are bapizes with Holy water to remove original sin. When we are baptized we receive the Holy Spirit.
