Agreed. There is nothing wrong with the banter and a bit of leg pulling but when it involves family and children then it is over the top. Rangers and Celtic supporters can take a bit of stick about Huns and Dhims etc but when it involves religious hatred ( and mostly for reasons they cannot explain) then it is time to call it a day. Some of the question on here I deliberately ignore, although it is hard at times, because to answer them gives them credibility.

Not a lot. As you well know I am a protestant who supports Celtic. I get abuse from Rangers fans for being a turn coat. Water off a ducks back as I am concerned, but some of the things that they say is disgusting.Equally I can`t see any reason why Celtic fans need to fly the tricolour at footballl matches. Celtic have a crest, fly a flag with it or the team colours. Both sides sing songs that have no place in the street, let alone a football match. But worst of all in this debate are the SFA. Go along to a match in the lower leagues when the Old Firm aren`t playing and you might get a `throw racism out of football` day. Excepting last night`s disgraceful events in Motherwell, Scottish football doesn`t have a racism problem. What it does have is a large bigotry problem. The SFA won`t do anything about it because the Old Firm bring so much money into the game in Scotland and if challenged by the SFA might go off to England. The irony is that it is the bigotry that is stopping Celtic and Rangers from being accepted down south.

My point of view is that bigotry is something that offends those who dont use it.

How dare a celtic supporter be offended by being called a "tim" when he's going to call you something too.
And vise versa.

But at the same time.

You people gotta grow up.
Name calling is something kids do, and something kids parents tell them not to do.
You wanna jibe someone, do it properly. Make sarcastic comments, and bitter jokes at their expense, like everyone else does.

All that said, this kind of thing against someone for their race, colour, creed or religion is just petty.
I'm not ignorant enough to think any of this is one way. Every group or denomination has people that do it to every other group or denomination. But that doesn't excuse it.

Celtic supporters are generally Catholic, Rangers (I assume you are one) supporters are generally protestant.
Get over it already.
Its not like the people of this world haven't had millenia to get over petty differences.

As a point for you interest, I'm an Englishman living in Glasgow.
Have been here for 3 years.
I've witnessed more than just banter and wind ups.
Lets not pretend that everyone is the same as you and just takes it as a joke.
I lived here a month and heard 3 stories of people getting kinfed for walking into the wrong pub on an Old Firm match.

Banter my @rse.

Banter with your local rivals is all part of being a football fan, but its true to say that the Glasgow situation is substantially different to the rest of the UK. I think you have to be aware of what you are saying, and how it could be taken. As you say yourself, its hard not to respond to a bigoted question with a bigoted answer. So the solution is to think about what you are saying before you ask a question. Treat everyone with a bit of simple respect , and 99% of the time you will get the same back. If someone posts an obviously abusive question, just report them and ignore them. If they dont get a response, theyll quickly get bored and stop.

And the 1% who just refuse to treat anyone else with decency are just not worth wasting your time on.

Banter is fine and most of the time good fun, as an Oxford supporter we 'hate' Swindon. I've met several people from Swindon and whilst I do make comments about it, I've only ever offended one person with it.

As long as it's all in good fun, there's no harm, but bigotry is never meant in fun and is despicable behaviour.

I hope i don,t come across as a bigot but i must say we all are to a extent ,it just depends who,s looking at it,i,m all about taking the piss ,but i would,nt argue that some could take that as bigotry, but shaz, you must admit in Glasgow it,s different than any other city a wee slagging match is part of our culture, but your right it should be nothing to personal ,or hurtful,i hope i have never come across like that, respect cave girl.

I have to say i agree with you. I can enjoy the fun no malice intended . .I do however, get a little annoyed when it gets to the stage where it goes beyond that. Basically we all love all of our clubs regardless. Everyone has the right to choose whom soever they wish to support. Your right! It is difficult to try and be sensible when answering some of the questions that are posted here. However, i think the majority that come onto this site do take it as a bit of fun.

I know what you mean, it's fun to have a laugh with each other and to take the pee out of each others teams but that should be as far as it should go. When it gets to the 'poisonous bile' stage it takes all the fun out of football. Some people do take it a wee bit to seriously!

shazza its a joke, there was a certain individual on here that was a joke with his consistent bigoted remarks, he never even answered the question's properly it was just bigoted remarks, there was no need for it, and now he is gone, or is he? anyhoo's because of his actions there are very few people on here that i trust (blame him).

what gets me is these bigots dont actually know what all the religious stuff is all about all they know is he catholic and I'm Protestant, and that give's them the right to slander, insult, maim, assault, even murder, its BS and just damm right childish, there is more to life than to worry about bigotry , but these people also take there crap to other people towns and city that have nothing to do with it, and it certainly should not be in football,no body is perfect we are all guilty of saying stuff that upsets others but there is a fine line between banter and slander, this forum was taken over from the bigots, genuine questions being asked and all they get is bigoted replies, its wrong and because of those bedroom gangsters this place has lost alot of really good people,
