Yep. I've done it a few times. It just depends on how strong the onion is. Sometimes you can barely smell it when you chop it up.

yes i have chopped onions before and my eyes never burn or got watery. It just depends on how strong the onion is, the pace at which you are going, the distance of the cutting area from your face(works fine for me at times) and if the knife is sharp enough...that may help.

the tricks are having them cold, running water over onions, i've also heard to drink milk and have a piece of bread in your mouth but i never did that i use to work at subway and we have to cut onions all the time and keeping them cold and under running water works the best and if u have contacts you shouldn't have a problem cause the fumes don't go in your eyes

All the time. Get the onion cold (store it in the fridge) and use a super sharp knife.

Two things you can do. One is put a piece of bread like french bread between your teeth so that it hangs out of your mouth. It will absorb what irritates your eyes.
The other is to put an unlit blue tip match between your teeth with the tip hanging out. This also will do the trick.

yes, but rarely. Try running it under cool water after you cut in half, I also heard that having a lit candle in the room absorbs the fumes?!?
