Write them a letter. Tell them to close the account and refund your credit balance.

Unless you have some really strange agreement with them, I don't know how they can refuse to close an account.

I suggest calling them again and ask how you could receive the excess. Do not say that you are intending or thinking about closing the account, which is most likely why the credit company is being uncooperative with you. Hopefully, they did not make a note of your last call wanting to close the account. Even if they did, whatever customer service rep you receive may not read too much into past customer logs. Once you get them to issue a refund and you have a zero balance, then call to cancel.

If they still do not do this, ask to speak to a supervisor or manager. Most of these “customer service” agents are outsourced and are working strictly by the book. This may entail keeping you as a customer at all costs even if it is unethical.

In addition, be cautious if you have any annual fees. The company may be hanging on to you in order to charge you.

The best advice is to be persistent and work the chain of command. Good luck.

That's your nightmare? I mean, that does suck. Why don't you buy one of those gift cards that can be used anywhere? I think Visa does one. Use your credit card to buy a $100 one, and then you can use it on whatever you want, including bill paying. You could keep arguing with the credit card company, but they are a pain in the butt, and this'd be a much quicker way to get what you want.

Ask them to send you your money first.

Once you receive it, ask them to close it.

Having the account open won't hurt until you have cleared all transactions.
