I'm looking for ideas on what to do for a first date with a girl I've asked out. I want to do something different to the more traditional cinema, bowling, or going for a meal in a restaurant or drinks in a bar...

depends how "girly" you and/or her is/are.
If not girly (either of you) a racing day/ learn to wheely a motorbike day/ off-road etc
If both sporty- some activity such as white water rafting (don't go for heights in case she has a dislike etc)
If both fairly feminine (or you are prepared to be)- how about a spa day
If you are different kinds of people (or are as yet unsure, depends on how well you know each other, then I am afraid it is boring and going out for dinner is a winner!- p.s. check for vegetarianism or eating habits and make sure you seem interested in what she says- if you have to pretend then you're not meant for each other!)

Surely the point is to be able to get to know the person so does it really matter where you're going? that's why a meal's much better than cinema, for example...

A picnic is always nice for a first date. Set up some flowers and a blanket near a lake or pond. It's always nice.
