I can't get to a regular groomer because of my work schedule and they are open on the weekends. I was wondering what kind of experiences people have had. I have a small 4 lb. yorkie with a pretty easy going personality, so it should be okay right?

Every place differs. I used to work at Petco (and before that, at Petsmart). The groomers there were terrible, but I know that some groomers at other Petco stores were pretty good. Same deal with Petsmart, or any grooming shop, for that matter. Just be sure to be 100% clear with the groomer about what you want. Use exact numbers when describing length (as in, don't say "cut him short", say "cut his body hair to about 1/2 inch"). If your dog is in poor condition (matted, tangled, waaaay overdue for grooming), don't expect a miracle. The groomer SHOULD be able to consult with you at drop-off, assess the dog's coat, and come up with a plan for what is and is not possible for the pup.
Also, don't be afraid to call up and ask about the groomers there. How long have they worked there? How long have they been grooming? Did they go to a grooming school or learn through an at-home course? Did they do an apprenticeship to learn, or were they self-taught? How much experience do your groomers have with Yorkies? Are they aware (and sensitive to) your dog's special needs and the breed's special needs? Do they hand-dry dogs, or leave them in drying enclosures? Do they use heated dryers? These are just a few questions you can ask to ease your mind and determine which groomer you want to use.
If you need more help with this, e-mail me and I'll gladly give you some more pointers, or help you locate a groomer in your area. There are MANY grooming places that have extended hours for those who work. My salon opens at 7am and closes at 7pm, and we're open 7 days a week. And it's NOT Petco or Petsmart! Good luck!

I don't know about Petco, but Petsmart in my home town. I buy my dog stuff there. They have a grooming place there that you can watch them grooming a dog. Since I love dogs I love watching them do that. They didn't hurt the dogs or were mean to them, but I also didn't see them talk to the dogs, or reassure the dogs they were working on. Just doing their job. I thought that was sad because the dogs look so scared. I felt if they would just talk to the dogs that they were working on they wouldn't look so sad.

I called many of groomers after a long time I finally found one that is wonderful She only does my dogs that day. They don't wait in a cage, She does three of mind at a time and i pick them up as each one is done. She doesn't do any other dogs while mine is there. She doesn't do it for a living she does it because she likes it. She is done by noon. And no dog is left to fend for them self. I really bless her I really do.

All I can say it go there and watch them ..see how they react to the dogs. I really don't like anyone work on my dogs if they won't talk softly to them....Just check out your resources OK..

I take my precious pooch to Petco for grooming, she only gets groomed by one particular person every time. That person does a great job.
I wouldn't generalize by saying that all the groomers are good. I guess it just depends on who is doing the grooming.
Just like a hair salon..you have your preference of who you like to cut your hair. It's not necessarily the salon that's good or bad, but the individual stylist.

I use to work at Petco too. I was there for 4 years in the grooming salon as a bather and had built up many good relationships with customers. And no matter how much I asked the many managers we had, they never sent me to grooming school. And then in the summer of last year (06'), they get this new manager in who doesn't know a darn thing about animals (he interviewed each employee individually and admited it), and obvioulsy doesn't know the law about discrimination against people with medical disabilities. I am a little slow at grooming and such as I have ADD, and am on medication. But I have a way with the animals, and even the meanest dog took to me really well. After I was told they had to give away some free grooms one week to the customers who weren't happy and that I did the dogs, (the new manager said I didn't finish some dogs groomings) by "forgetting" to do a dogs nails (which I did try but the were too short to clip anymore off) and not cleaning around a dogs gooey eyes (I couldn't scrub too much as they were already irritated and obviously infected and I had stated that the owner neded to take the to the vet) the manager decided to cut my hours. Thats how this company handles screw ups. I warn anyone who wants to work in a pet store like petco someday this is your punishment. To me that doesn't teach the employees what they did wrong. Its some high schooler kids punishment you know? (no offense to any of you High Schoolers). Not good for those who have bills to pay, car insurance, ect. and don't just use our paychecks for "play money." This was terrible as it was December Holidays and I had little money to even buy Christmas Presents for my Family. But they all thankfully understood. So eventually I had to call there every week to see if I could get any hours back, and after numerous tries and excuses. Finally after the holidays, I figure out that they were basically trying to get me to quit and to find something else. So I get the big guys breathing down their backs and peeking over their shoulders, and supposevely things get handled, and they all of a sudden they try and offer me my job back. I will not go back there with the people who treated me wrong. I hate petco...they discriminate against people with disabilities and they abuse animlas in the grooming shops which was another thing I saw in my years of working there. I reported it, but it didn't stop. I told all my customers, and friends and family what happened and to not to take their dogs there or go there anymore. petco won't suffer much though...they have a multi-million dollar industry and charge higher than petsmart does. They make their money... I have now decided to go on my own being a part-time groomer and be self-employed. I set my own hours, make twice as much money as I ever did at Petco, do a whole lot less work. And the dogs aren't as stressed out because the get to be in a home environment. And a big plus is the dogs know me. I have tried getting with lawyers about my situation, but no one will take my case, and the longer I have tried and waited the less of a chance I have of getting the justice I deserve. So oh well, where I live is Texas, whcih is a Right To Work State, and your boss can fire you if you look a him wrong basically. I just want to mention that its the people like that whose paychecks have money taken out by the government like normal and it goes towards people like me who are unemployed. If a person had a disability, but wants and is willing , and is able to work, then darn it let them work! And I am done now....I'll get off my soap box...thank you for reading...

it is a dog... take it to get groomed where ever you like... if you don't like the job that the beauty school drop out does at PETCO, take it somewhere else the next time
