Lethargy is a state of drowsiness, inactivity, or indifference in which there are delayed responses to external stimuli such as auditory (sound), visual (sight), or tactile (touch) stimuli. Lethargy may also refer to the general malaise and decreased activity exhibited by animals that do not feel well.

Lethargy is a nonspecific sign associated with many possible underlying systemic disorders. It may have little to no impact on the affected individual; however its presence may represent severe or life-threatening illness. Lethargy of more than a day's duration should not be ignored, and should be addressed, especially if it persists.

General Causes:

1. Anemia (low red blood cell count)
2. Other blood disorders
3. Cardiovascular (heart and vessels) and pulmonary (respiratory) disorders
4. Chronic inflammation or infection
5. Drug or medication related
6. Electrolyte abnormalities
7. Endocrine (hormonal) or metabolic disorders
8. Gastrointestinal diseases
9. Urinary tract disorders
10. Cancer
11. Immune diseases
12. Certain severe skin diseases
13. Certain eye diseases, particularly those associated with blindness
14. Neurologic and neuromuscular disorders
15. Nutritional disorders
16. Behavioral disorders
17. Skeletal diseases
18.Infectious diseases
19. Exposure to certain toxins
20. Physical trauma

Identifying an underlying cause is essential in determining the appropriate treatment plan and care of the patient.

The cuase of your kitty's present lethragy may be something simpe to treat. But you need to take him to the vet for a proper diagnosis. A physical, cardiac and blood test will most probably be performed. I am guessing but kitty may have a heart problem that can be treated with the simple addition of more taurine in his diet. My neighbor had this problem with his kitten a few years ago. That cat is now very active and healthy. Of course, he had to take kitty to te vet to be diagnosed.

Did anything in your house change? We had 2 cats and then when we got our 3rd the 2nd one totally changed. Before #3 he didn't want to be around people or anything wouldn't come to you or sit by you, now he is a total lover he is super sweet a totally different cat now. So maybe something changed and if not that I would call your vet first and see what they say he might be really sick and you just don't know it.

Mostly nothing. Start with the food. Is it well balanced, and have all the nutrients your adult cat needs? Sad to say, but you get what you pay for in pet foods most of the time. So get a better brand of food that is well balanced and designed for the conditions of your cat.

What do you do with your cat, anything? Cat nip, play toys, string, anything? Start slow by introducing him to new toys at a pet store (many allow you to take you pet in with you). Then work up to string so that he is encouraged to follow it around. Also cat nip will put your cat at ease and most will run around crazy for some time to get execise. This will improve your pets stimulation situation 100 fold.

Best of luck.

How many time can I say this VET! VET! VET! VET! VET! Anytime there is something wrong with your pet take it to the vet!! If you can not afford to then you should not have animals!! I set aside 20 a month in a seperate account just for emergency vet visits!! It really adds up there is over 1000.00 in our cat fund and 500.00 in the dog fund. That is just 10.00 every two weeks how hard is that!!!!

Will he play with a string if you try to engage him? Does he look like he is in pain? Feel his body and legs to see if he winces if touched. Check everywhere and look for open sores or other signs of problems (tape worms, oozing eyes, etc). If you find something, get it fixed.

Cats don't always show pain so maybe there is something wrong with him like a broken or hurt leg, parasites, or infection. If he doesn't get up and move around in a day or so bring him to a vet.

Maybe nothing. But if you're worried, take him for a check-up and tell the vet your concerns. Some cat illnesses tend to be 'invisible' other than maybe a bit of laziness or a desire to sleep a lot.

Oh sure! each and all of the time lol, it makes me bounce up with fright and make an apology (cats call) and then I recognize this is barely between the cats rubber balls that i'm stepping on. it is so humorous while that occurs! lol

if he isn't normally like this, then i would take him to the vet asap! it may be something really minor but if it's not i'm sure it's better to find out now so you can start helping him as quickly as possible. Better to be safe than sorry, hope he's ok!

you are a very caring cat owner asking idiots like me for advice on your cat's medical condition... perhaps you should set the example for your cat by getting off your butt and taking him/ her to a vet instead of asking the ignorant masses for advice... there is obviously something wrong with your cat... do something about it

Please take your cat to the vets. If they've got such a change in behavior, it's best to get the professionals opinion on it, rather than some random people online.
