I guess it depends where you live. I turn mine off! Or back in the day, a person would blow candles out.

Used to be one would use a candle, torch, or lantern for illumination. In order to "turn the light off", you would need to put the fire out. Now you just put the light "out".

The terms out and off are usually used colloquially, and probably stem from blowing candles "out." It's interesting to note however that direct translations from French and other languages often refers to "opening" and "closing" the lights...
