Pay attention to the diamonds and their quality. You can buy a 1.5 c diamond for alot cheaper if its a crap quality diamond and you dont want to do that, get to know how to tell what a good quality diamond is.

Plus alot of people are stuck on princess cut diamonds, but if you want one that really sparkles, get the brilliant cut isntead, they are much more sparkly thana princesss

Are you talking about a wedding band? Engagement rings you can buy pear shape, square cut, traditional tiffany setting. For a wedding band, how about a circle of beautiful diamonds all arounf the wedding ring. Very simple but so elegant.

Really depends on what budget you have, what the bride's taste is, etc. Also, are you talking about the engagement ring or the actual wedding band? If the band, do you want hers to match yours? If so, will the engagement ring work with the wedding ring?

Does she prefer silver or gold jewelry? If silver (look), would she prefer actual silver, white gold or platinum? If gold, 10, 14, 24K? Does she like round, princess, or what cut of diamonds?

Would she like something simple (like traditional simple ring with 1 diamond for engagement and plan metal band for wedding ring) or would she like something more elaborate?

I would suggest just thinking about your girl, think about her personality and what her taste is, then maybe go to a few jewelery stores and look and see what rings seem to "fit" her type. If her parents already know you are going to marry her, you could maybe enlist their help in picking out the ring. They may know what type of jewelry styles she tends to like.

Just know, she will still love what you pick anyway because it is from the heart and it is something that represents your love for her!

I bought a claddagh ring as my wedding ring; I also wear it in place of my engagement ring. I love it. It means love, loyalty, and friendship. Many women in Ireland wear this ring as a wedding or engagement ring, and it is often passed down to other generations. The saying that corresponds to this ring is: "With my two hands I give you my heart and crown it with my love."

Although claddagh rings come from Ireland, you don't have to be Irish to wear them. I'm not. It's the meaning that counts.

Claddagh rings from Ireland are stamped by an official office in Ireland to guarantee the gold content. So, if it says 14k gold, you can be sure it's 14k. The U.S. doesn't have such a safeguard.

A good quality claddagh ring will cost much less than a diamond. I paid around $400 for an extra heavy claddagh ring of 14 k gold (http://www.allcladdagh.com).

Just one word of caution: don't get the maids ring. This is for little girls! The ladies' ring is a must.

And, in case you're also buying your fiancee's wedding ring, check out Overstock.com's tungsten rings. Tungsten is a scratch resistant material. Here is the ring I'm considering for my fiancee: http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?page=proframe&prod_id=1055080&AK=1

sure many folks would say diamonds. fancy bling that shows off more about thier wallets than the way they feel, I say simple, elegant, classic, something that will feel nice as well, my fiancé Mac and I have been looking at bands. the perfect circle to symbolise eternity no gem stones, that way they can be worn always, were probably going to get a 3 metal braid on a gold ring symbolising intamacy, love and careing, but what we really wanted was a pair of celtic 2 tone rings with ornate knot work, (so beautifull) Google, celtic wedding bands warrior sheild, that will pull you up some amazing designes or just google celtic knot wedding bands, I tell you those Celts really know something or two about meatal working, type in Irish gold for other rings as well, any how I really sugest that, its like having a work of art on your ring finger!
hope it all goes well!

Buy what you can afford. There are alot of rings that are beautiful and inexpensive. There is nothing wrong buying another ring when both of you can really afford it. Rings only mean something when they come out of love, not how much you paid for them.

Take her with you to pick it out! Sure, you want it to be a surprise, but, you don't have to let her know when you're proposing! My fiance and I picked my ring out together, then...he proposed. I was just as surprised as I would have been if he had picked out the ring himself. Or...you can always walk by the jewelry stores with her in tow and see which rings she glances at or comments at. That'll narrow down the basics for you such as: color, cut, and clarity. Good luck!!
