In reading what everyone else responded....mostly the correct answer is that you can wear spikes for almost every event. They are espeically helpful for jumping and shorter events but even long events are spike worthy. I was a long distance track runner and a cross country runner. I wore spikes during every race for cross country. Because you can change the size of spikes, they can be used for many different events. I had the same shoes for both track and cross country but cross country sometimes required a longer front spike for traction. Then again, if the course had a lot of road, then i would hold off on putting my larger front spikes in. As for track, I had shorter spikes but they still made a huge difference. Plus, spikes are SOOO much lighter than normal running shoes. Just like you wouldn't run in heavy sweats at a meet, you don't run in heavy shoes- you compete in lighter sports wear, including spikes.
Hope that answers your question!

Spikes are best for any event on a soft surface(i.e not concrete) and SHOULD NOT be trained in.. Use cross trainers or a descent running shoe with some weight to it for practice. This will cause a significant drop in your times for the event you compete in. For distance, make sure you get a shoe rated for at least a 10,000 meter race(it will tell you when you order them. I recommend eastbay.com) Because they have a decent amount of sole for your heel since you use it more. With my times my Mile split for a 5k usually drops about 15-20 seconds.

spikes are used most likely for shorter distances, long jumps, and triple jumps. if u use them for longer distances like the 800 1600 or the 3200 it will be a pain on ur feet. most schools dont allow spikes for high jump because of the landing pad

Trust me on this one... spikes are for anyone and everyone... no matter what aspect of track/field you are partaking in, or what level you compete at, spikes can and will improve your performance! My freshman year, I dropped 30 seconds in a 5K simply because I bought spikes! The sooner you get them, the sooner you'll drop time... just make sure you buy a pair that fits very well, and doesn't just look cool.

spikes are worn in every track & field event except for the shot & discus. they provide a noticable advantage over trainers.

spikes are used for traction unless you have 16 penny spikes and they are used for framing a house.
