The French Foreign Legion is truly a fine organization, comprised of men from many, if not, all nations of the Earth. We've learned much from them, but, to say they are the best may or may not be a stretching of the truth. I do not claim the SEALs are the best, though, I do have a great amount of pride in them. Aussie and British Commandoes are amongst the best in the world, as well. The Swiss have some totally kick butt troops stashed away, and we cannot forget the Speznats, nor the RoK's. There are alot of really specialized combatants out there, but, no one organization can take the title of being the best. Sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but, that's just the truth.

Not for the two world wars, only during the second.

In WWI France was the large winner like URSS during WWII
Remember Marne 1914
Verdun 1916
and again Marne in 1918.
General Patton has fought during world war one in a french tank(Renaud FT17)

For the second world war yes
but no country would have gained against the Wehrmacht without some allied countries(even the USSR)
And France has been the only country of the war which have fought against 100% of the German army, during 1939 1940.
US army has never fought against more than 15% of the Wehrmacht because more than 80% of the germans soldiers were in USSR.

I once saw a show on Channel 4 in the UK about the Legion and they truly are tough soldiers. They had a jungle assault course set up in French Guyana which tested their fitness abilities in really hard conditions namely the heat, humidity and altitude. The best record for completing the course was 20 minutes whilst the US Marine Corps had the dubious distinction of having the worst record taking over 15 hours to complete it!

I hear tell they are very focused on overall soldier discipline and that they train a lot of martial arts. As for why they needed us, well so did many others, UK etc, because the Germans were very good at warfare. Its like America today, why does America need all these other nations like Pakistan ,etc to fight what they call a rag tag undisciplined and in no manner properly trained Iraq resistance, or Al Qaeda? I suppose these less then good soldiers have a higher moral call against our superior good warfare makers that is aiding them to kick our rear ends.

I really am getting at you, since you even take my ID for your questions, am I?

Beware! A gay french soldier may well be in your back when you're not looking!

Oh, and as much I appreciate the american involvment in WW I, we didn't actually "need" you. We sure were thankful for reinforcements, but we had to train, equip and lead in battle the americans soldiers who were quite still a "Rough Riders" forces that could not match the 3 years trench battle-hardened french, british, canadian and german soldiers.

But it is French equipment, French leaders (General Ferdinand Foch as top allied commander, giving orders to General Pershing), French airpower, French tanks French soldiers and French strategy that led the allies to the "draw" of WW I!

With all due respect for the 115,000 american soldiers who died along our side in 1917-1918. I visited their battlefields and graves like in Chateau-Thierry and Verdun.

You are deluded to think they aren't very good. They are now the elite French troops sent where the French don't want to send French troops
That is why they are called Foreign as they are predominantly not French men.

They were kept rather busy in Africa at the times of WW I & WW II

I met a few of them and they are tough. But they are a very small organization. They are around 8000 active duty Legionnaires and compared to the America's smallest force, the Marine Corps of around 150,000 active duty Marines. They also don't have the same support system with combined arms with the other services like they do in the U.S. and are not as well equipped as the U.S. soldier or Marine.
