By far the best cat litter I have ever used is Pets at Home Fullers Earth. The wet stuff clumps together so you can scoop it up really easily along with the solids (on a daily basis). You won't need to change the whole lot every other day with this (although once a week is recommended) so it is much cheaper. Because you are getting rid of everything, it smells much less to. I have tried every sort of litter and found this the best!
NB: Second to this is Sainsbury's clumping litter.

I find the best to be Oko's plus from Zooplus. I've tried the clay based ones and they stink something unbearable.
I've noticed some nitwit above mentioned that clay doesn't kill trees, well, I guess he sits on plastic chairs and keeps his clothes in the fridge. Wood pellets are made of wood chips leftover from the wood industry (furniture, building, etc...) AND can be composted! This means you don't need to wrap the lumps in a plastic bag which will pollute the environment.
If your cat is indoors only, Oko (and World's Best, but that one is so expensive) can be flushed down the toilet. BUT if your cat goes out, the waste shouldn't be flushed because diseases which are harmless to cats can kill otters in rivers (I know it sounds weird but I read about it on a wildlife journal!)
You don't need to clean the whole tray every other day, but of course the more often the better for your kitty and the general smell of the household. Some advise clearing the tray out once a month! So, opinions are divided on that.

I like the wood based pellets so much better than the grainy, pebbly grey stuff - this produces far too much dust and is harder to sweep up. Litter tray should be changed whenever the cat toilets - your doing right by removing the faeces when they are passed. After the cat urinates, some cats will not urinate in the same tray again unless it has been cleaned, whilst others will toilet again, it depends - sounds like your doing the right thing

I have had cats for about 30 years and have always used 'clumping ' fullers earth. I empty and wash the litter tray once a week( two cats). I have tried tried every variety of litter there is, some of which have been quite pricey and none of them have been better than the fullers earth. If you and your cat manage well with your usual litter then stick with it , as cats can get upset when things get changed around too much.P.S. Don't over clean the litter tray, cats prefer a 'natural' scent with which they are familiar, it helps reinforce the habit of using the litter tray for toilet purposes.

I find "Scoop Away" or "Fresh Step" to be the best as for as cleaness, best smelling, & clumps real good too...yeah, scoop the clumps very often but, you don't have to clean the whole tray every other day, just when you need to refil it, normally once 2-3 weeks or you can look on the box it should have that info... :]

Forget what those other people are trying to sell you.
I've own cats all my life and the very best litter is Ever Clean hands down. You will pay more but you won't get a better clumping litter then this. I have used the other litters that people are telling you about but still Ever Clean is still the best.
I'll bet that they have never used it. And if anyone says they have and don't like it they are lying.

Have tried the wood pellets but prefer to use Catsan,it really absorbs odours. I clean out poo as soon as it's done and change the whole tray every couple of days.

All cats like different things, but as a rule they prefer finer litter, and some even sand. Many cats also prefer the none clumping types, ahich I know makes it harder for us to clean, but if thats what they like in my house, that is what they get. - lol
I would say the amount you clean it out is fine, thats what I do too.
Another thing to think about with litter trays is that you should have one per cat + one. so if you have one cat you should have two trays. if you have 2 cats you should have three trays.
Hope this has been of some help.

A clumping litter is the best. You scoop out the clumps when it needs it and add a little more litter after you scoop it. They come in different brands.

good question! i use the silica gel type litter, because i have a long haired cat & the litter that clumps tends to clump in his fur "bloomers" & the tufts of his paws, then it hardens and he pickes it out and spits it everywhere! gross! but i also have two short hair cats & have been looking for alternatives, as the dust is awful when i refill the boxes, and the stuff is expensive & i have to change the boxes every 10 days or so (they say a month--yeah right!!)
