I drive on a state road in a fairly rural area to get to work every day. Lately, there has been a dog that runs right in front of my car in the morning. He appears anywhere in a half-mile stretch. He is a large dog and I know if I were to hit him it would do some damage to my car. I have to slam my brakes to avoid hitting this dog who then paces in front of my car. There have been some close calls.
I was talking about it to a co-worker who lives in that area. She said the dog is aggressive and runs loose on a daily basis. She also said that the dog is owned by a former co-worker. I called the dog’s owner to notify her of the dog’s activities but she was unconcerned. I love animals and have 3 dogs who are properly restrained. This is happening in Boone County, Indiana.
Any advice is appreciated!

Should have mentioned that animal control will not go to this area since it is a rural. I notified the Boone County Sheriff who stated that I could shoot it.

If you were to hit the dog and your car was damaged, generally your insurance company will go after the dog's owner to pay the damages.

If enough people complain to the sheriff's dept, they should consider the dog a nuisance and the owner should be responsible. If they are the kind of people I think they are, they will probably deny ever seeing the dog. Does anybody ever ride with you that could take pictures of the dog harassing traffic? That would help you should you be the unfortunate one to hit the dog.
If that ever happens, keep the wheel straight and slow down as much as possible and still maintain control of your car. I know you don't want to hit the dog, but it would be worse if you went into oncoming traffic or in the ditch and have a rollover.
We had a problem around this area kind of like that, and a older guy taught the dog a lesson. This dog would try to bite your tires as you drove by. The guy tied a rag to the rim of his tire and let the dog get ahold of it. The dog got a good jerk and respected traffic after that. Good luck!

well if you were to slam on the brakes and a car hit you from behind all because of this dog i think you might get in trouble. however we are all suppose to drive at a speed and at a distance that the guy in front can slam his brakes on and we wont hit him so its a tough call. i would call the police not the dog cops but instead the police . i was nearly killed once because i swerved to miss a puppy . its instint you cant really train yourself not to turn the wheel when you see an animail . this dog is very likely going to cause a death . so call the cops and insist they come and get this dog. i know the owner can be held responsible for the accident and since you will have made the cops take a written report then your better off as is every other person who might crash because of the dog.
yip this is serious i know what your going through once on this road i had to take each day this stupid farmer let his cattle about 500 of them walk on the road right at the crest of a hill . i put the cows back in the field 4 times for the jerk before he fixed the fence.
so call the cops and make them do there job they will try to get you to call someone else or forget about it but no you insist they come and you sign a written complaint. if they hassle you about this then call the attortery general of ontario. . this is not a joking matter

Well this is a little tricky of a question. The first thing you should do, is of course notify the owner with your concerns, if that makes no head way, call local athourities about it. If, heaven forbide, you did happen to hit the dog on accident, I believe it would be like if the dog bit you, the owner would have to pay for the damages. They already know of the danger and if they aren't doing anything to help the situation than the responsibility should fall on them, along with a heafty vet bill should the dog survive.

Maybe its me. The owner doesn't give a crap, so what if you did hit the dog. As sad as this statement is it would be a voice to how the dog is treated in the first place. Yes, I agree that animal control should be involved, but if the animal found a new home or did not exist it would have a better life and the complications you are having would disappear.

If you were to hit the dog on any road and damage was sustained by your car, the dog's owner would be responsible.
God willing, you won't ever hit the dog, or cause an accident with another car by swerving to avoid the dog, but in the event that you do, you'd want to have your insurance company go after her. Don't attempt to do it yourself.
In the meantime, and before anything tragic occurs, contact the local animal control officer or police and let them know of the hazard so that they can take steps to make the dog's owner accept responsibility for ensuring her dog's (and yours!) safety.
Good luck

I would call animal control. Especially if this dog is aggressive like your co-worker says. A loose aggressive dog is a threat to the community. Animal control will either fine the owner, or they will capture the dog. It is not safe to have any dog loose in any type of community. I hope that this is of help to you and your situation.

All states have a leash law and if the dog is on the road and you hit it, the owners are responsible for the damage done to your car. You might want to report this dog to your local law enforcement, that way you have documentation that this is an ongoing problem. What is bothering me the most is the irresponsible owner is putting their dog in harm's way. Shame on them, and thank you for at least trying to protect the dog.

Call animal control and let them know that there is a dog loose in the area. Most places have leash laws about that sort of thing. The owner will probably get a fine.

Since the owner has no regards for the dog's safety, I suggest that you call your local animal control about it. I hate for animals to be picked up by animal control because you never know what will happen to the animal. But I think that this would be the best thing for you to do in this case. Safer for the dog & all others that have to come in contact with him/her whether they are in automobiles or on foot.
