i am bi polar and lately my mood swings have been very severe. I don't have health insurance and simply cannot afford to pay for the medications that i need each month. I've tried changing my diet, and excericise regularly because i heard that can help, but it just hasn't been helping. My highs and lows are so bad i'm afraid of what i may be capable of doing to myself. Some of the time i feel great! And am happy to be alive, but when i get those lows i don't feel like doing anything but laying in bed. What can i do??? I can't go on like this anymore. It doesn't even take that much to get me in a mood, it just happens. Help me please?

The drug companies will give free medications to people that qualify (ie not having health insurance, lower income). You have to get a doctor to fill out the paper work and then all your medications will be Free.

When I was younger, I did not have health insurance, I saw a local doctor and he helped me get my meds through the companies.

Additionally, Lithium, the gold standard mood stabilizer is real cheap. So, you might be able to afford that for some help.

I am bipolar & in about the same situation as you are. You need your medicine. Without your medicine you will only get worse and maybe never get back to the place you were before you stopped your medicine. There are places on the web that help you with either free medicine or low cost medicines. Once you've applied you will see how easy it is. All you need is a prescription to get your medicine. You can go to one of the many free clinics, your doctor, or the hospital for that.

Do you know a hospital anywhere in your state that takes people without insurance?

(In Illinois, I went to Chicago Read hospital without insurance.)

Or even just asking a place like that--- they have professionals that might be able to connect you with low cost options for medications. I've heard that some pharmaceutical companies offer their medications at a discount, too.

Good luck to you........

Visit your local Wholefoods store. Those people are very knowledgeable and may be able to suggest a herb or vitamin that may help you with your moods. For example, I have a friend who was on prescription cholesterol medication and did her no good. She visited Wholefoods and the lady there was knowledgeable and recommended her a herb, can't remember what the name of it, but my friend went to get her cholesterol checked again by her doctor after taking the herb for sometime, her cholesterol is down to normal again. I myself am going to try it too since I have high cholesterol.

Besides meds., I really dont think that there is much else you can do. Some doctors can give you samples so that would cut down on the costs.
