Atheists get to chase tail? I didn't get the memo on that. I have some making up to do then.

When they talk about the standard of good being ones self, it means we do the right thing merely because it is the right thing to do. Not for approval from some deity. When we do something wrong, we accept responsibility for it ourselves. We don't blame it on a demon, or satan, or some other "bad spirit". We did what we did because we made the conscious decision to do so.

And, though I am an atheist, I would have to say "Amen" to the chasing J-Lo's tail answer.

LOL... the funny thing is that you've answered everyone.. I believe you are having fun. If Atheists believe in nothing, isn't that a formed belief in itself? I don't think you have to be an Atheist to chase ones own tail, or someone else's tail for that matter. It's been my experience that there are people from all walks of life that have their head up their ***.

The existence of a world without God seems to me less absurd than the presence of a God, existing in all his perfection, creating an imperfect man in order to make him run the risk of Hell.

Hopefully, you are not taking yourself seriously. Because the question and comments are... how should I put it?... bad.

By the way, I do have my faith (but you wouldn't know the difference between an atheist and a monkey. I don't look like a monkey so forget this joke. find something else, einstein, just kidding... peace, man

Who said self is the standard for good?

---------

added:

Matt knows what I think? WOW! That's proof of a psychic power, he must be a mind reader. Do other Christians have the ability to read your mind just because they agree with you?

And Matt points out that ethics comes from evolution, not the self.

What?

You've clearly made the mistake of treating atheists as a single unified bloc. They're not. Atheists have radically different opinions on almost everything, as they adhere to no formal structure.

2007-03-01 16:09:19 · answer #6 · answered by Anonymous · 5 0

Do you know that you probably have no idea how many nice, moral, ordinary people you know are atheists.

The nice guy on the corner who shovels his elderly neighbors' sidewalks; the pretty young cashier at the convenience store, your mail carrier:; your best friend's sister, etc. Any and all of them might be atheists!

* Human beings, through their ability to empathise, are capable of determining ethical grounds.
* Human beings, through logic and reason, are capable of deriving normative principles of behaviour.
* This may lead to a behaviour morally preferable to that propagated or condoned based on religious texts.

~~~ JD,,,, Wherever did you get this notion? Your concept of "atheists" has no foundation in fact. Your Perception leaves a lot to be desired and your Generalization illustrates your ignorance on the subject.
Why would my standard for good be "self"? I live in a community in a state in a nation on a planet full of other people.
