What is the story behind this?

Khalid it is not a sin to wonder about an order Allah has given us, and to wonder about the stories behind them. Thanks for the answer though.

Praise be to Allah.

Allah says in the Holy Qur'aan (interpretation of the meaning):
"It is not fitting for a Believer, man or woman, when a matter has been decided by Allah and His Messenger to have any option about their decision: if any one disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he is indeed on a clearly wrong Path. "
Al-Ahzab 33:36

"But no, by the Lord, they can have no (real) Faith, until they make thee judge in all disputes between them, and find in their souls no resistance against Thy decisions, but accept them with the fullest conviction."
Al-Nisaa' 4:65

"He cannot be questioned for His acts, but they will be questioned (for theirs)."
Al-Anbiya' 21:23

Brother, don't get used to ask WHY about Allah's orders, when you know that it's an order just do it without asking. If Allah guided you to know the purpose, this is good. But if He didn't, thank Allah that he guided you to know this order, because others don't. And then follow it.

So, about answering your question:
The main reason: is because it's an order from messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) and as you know that every single word from the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) is a revelation from Allah.
Other reasons could be: to keep your clothes clean.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever drags his garment on the ground, as a show-off attitude, will never behold Allah on Doomsday". Thereupon, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the Prophet: “O Allah’s Messenger! My garment is somehow long but I manage to keep it from dragging." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “You are not known for showing-off". (Sahih Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
