From Brussels Midi, what is the cheapest train to Amsterdam Central? I heard the Thalys is not as fast as it claims to be and the IC(intercity) is actually a better choice. Any ideas?

The cheapest train from Brussels (Midi, Centrale or Nord) is not the Thalys but the IC. It is not much slower than the Thalys, because in Holland, the Thalys is not allowed to ride as fast as it can ride in France. However, sometimes Thalys has special offers so you could always check their website at www.thalys.com.

The IC leaves every hour at about .40 from Midi. What it costs depends on your age: if you're younger than 26, you will get a reduction and a one-way-ticket will cost you about 30 euros. It will be at about 45 euros without reduction. It will take you at about 3 hours to get from Brussels Midi to Amsterdam Central Station.
There is more information and a timetable at http://www.b-rail.be/main/index.html.

Indeed the Thalys only speeds up between Brussels and Paris, from Amsterdam to Brussels there are a lot of stops so indeed it is not good to go on it specially as you have to book the tickets, the places, can't miss it and also is much more expensive! The Inter-City is not much slower and it is much cheaper! I have done that trip several times and had no problems! Also if you miss one there is always the next one to get. The maximum that can happen is not having a place to sit if it's too crowded. However it's not so bad as when it stops you can get a place as some people leave, and before more people enter. Just be quick!
Have fun!

It takes you 3,30 h to 4,00 h(I heard the journey is shorter then years ago before it was more then 4,00h from Brussel) from Brussel with the IC (direct only a few stops), believe me it's the best choise, Thalys trains are not so good and expensive.

I forgot. But I got on in Paris, onto Brussells. I didn't go direct. From there to Rotterdam.
( They said ) it was the only train out.

Once you get there you're close to Breda and Delft. I was heading for Scheveningen, so naturally, you have to go Den Haag, and a last trolley.

It's a long ride because Amsterdam is quite north. Then again the whole countries only about eighty nine miles so no biggie.
